Who Why They're Up
Andre Agassi
The game, sadly, will need a new elder statesman soon. Agassi announced he will retire after the 2006 U.S. Open. Catch him while you can.
Justine Henin-Hardenne
The French Open champ beat a resurgent Anastasia Myskina in the final to win the Eastbourne title. Can the Belgian Backhand complete the career Slam in two weeks? The guess here is yes.
Mario Ancic
The hard-serving Ancic defended his Ordina Open title. His likely quaterfinal match against Federer in Wimbledon might be the de facto final.
Michaela Krajicek
To the dismay of Amelie Mauresmo (who likely plays Krajicek in the second round of Wimbledon), the Dutch teenager won her third WTA title in Hertogenbosch, beating Dinara Safina in the final.
Richard Gasquet
The talented Frenchman, who has struggled mightily in 2006, defended his Nottignham title by beating Jonas Bjorkman in the final. The bad news is Gasquet's first-round opponent at Wimbledon is that guy, Roger something or other.
Doubles winners
Kuznetsova and Mauresmo (who says top singles stars no longer play doubles?) in Eastbourne. The age-less team of Leander Paes and Martin Damm at the Ordina Open. Ehrlich and Ram in Nottingham. Yan and Zheng in Hertogenbosch.
Mansour Bahrami
The Meadowlark Lemon of tennis (with an unbelievable backstory) has a DVD out: www.mansourbahrami.com
Anna Kournikova
OK, five years ago she was as ubiquitous as Paris Hilton and today she's playing WorldTeam Tennis the same week as the Wimbledon final. Still, nice to have her back in the fold.
Iva Majoli
The 1997 French Open winner is getting married in September.
Romina Oprandi
The darling of the Italian Open qualifies and draws Svetlana Kuznetsova in Round 1, the player she nearly beat in the Rome quaterfinals.
Roger Federer
He agrees to let Billie Jean King grill him in the current issue of Interview Magazine.
Torben Ulrich
The former Wimbledon quarterfinalist will be performing with his band at Gallery 1412 in Seattle, July 15 at 8 p.m. In this performance, Ulrich will continue vocal improvisations off of texts from his series, Stilhedens Cymbaler ("Cymbals of Silence"). More info at www.gallery1412.org.
Chris Griffin
The San Diego transplant defeated the wily Mike Hassan 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in 2 hours 45 minutes in the 3.5 singles final of the La Jolla Tennis Club Tournament.

Who Why They're Down
Roger Federer
It's hard to recall a player getting such a nasty, nasty Wimbledon draw. Gasquet, Henman, Berdych and Ancic just to reach the semis? What did he ever do to tee off the folks at the All England Club? He'll need that Nike air-conditioned attire.
Nicolay Davydenko
The top seed in Hertogenbosch, loses first match to Phil (Don't call me Milan) Kolschreiber.
Jelena Dokic
A former Wimbledon semifinalist lost in the first round of qualies to Alexandra Stevenson.

Enjoy the first week of Wimbledon, everybody!
