Sports Casting Call: Grey's Anatomy
Here's the fourth edition of our monthly feature in which we pair characters from a TV show with sports figures. This month we cast Grey's Anatomy.
Meredith GreyKen Griffey Jr.
The daughter of a famous doctor, Meredith certainly has all the skills but is prone to breaking down (witness her pitiful "Pick me, choose me" scene with McDreamy or disastrously sleeping with O'Malley). The son of a famous baseball player, the multi-skilled Griffey was in the midst of a remarkable career when his body began breaking down.
Derek SheperdTom Brady
Dr. Shepherd (a.k.a. McDreamy) isn't just a talented brain surgeon, he's also catnip to the ladies, from patients to fellow doctors. As quarterback of the three-time champion Patriots, Brady is the brains of the team as well as a pin-up idol.
Izzie StevensDanica Patrick
Izzie wants to be known for her scalpel skills like the other surgeons, but some dismiss her as a pretty face. She might leave Seattle Grace after the Denny incident. Patrick wants to be judged by her steering skills like the other drivers, but some dismiss her as a pretty face. She might be leaving the IRL for NASCAR, home of Denny's lovers.
George O'MalleyJoey Harrington
O'Malley has undeniable skills (witness the open-heart surgery he performed in an elevator) yet often lacks self-confidence and may not be tough enough to be a surgeon. The Lions made Harrington a No. 1 pick because of the skills he showed at Oregon, but he seemed to lose confidence when his toughness was questioned in some quarters.
Cristina YangMartina Hingis
Yang might well be a genius, but her overwhelming desire to be under the bright lights of the operating room can make her hard to deal with. Maybe she'll mature like Hingis has in her comeback, since, like Yang, the younger Swiss Miss was a savant on the court but so eager for the spotlight that she memorably picked fights with her peers.
Alex KarevMichael Vick
Karev is a flashy, cocky doc who seems to think that most women want to experience a night with him. He sometimes goes by the alias Evil Spawn, and gave George syphilis via Olivia. Vick is a flashy QB with a hot Nike commercial dubbed the Michael Vick Experience. He sometimes goes by the alias Ron Mexico, and allegedly gave a former paramour herpes.
Preston BurkeStephon Marbury
Burke is a gifted surgeon who has long desired to fill Chief's shoes and be top dog; arrogance might be his Achilles' heel. Burke could learn a lesson from Marbury, who pushed his way out of Minnesota because he didn't want to play second fiddle to Kevin Garnett. How has that worked out for the self-proclaimed "best point guard in the NBA"? .
Richard WebberRobert Parish
As Chief of Surgery, Dr. Webber gets to clean the (operating room) board but is sometimes overshadowed on the screen by his younger colleagues. As Chief on the Celtics, Parish also cleaned the boards while setting screens for his younger and more high-profile teammates.
Miranda BaileyBob Knight
Bailey's drill-sergeant demeanor has earned her the nickname "the Nazi," though to her credit her charges are indeed learning to succeed in a difficult environment -- and she's never thrown a chair. Knight's martial style is part of the reason he's known as the General.
Addison SheperdVijay Singh
Addison plays the heavy in the Meredith-McDreamy-Addison triangle; no matter what she does, it's always about the other two. Still, she cheated on Derek. Going by recent success, golf should revolve around Tiger, Phil and Vijay, but everyone fixates on Tiger and Phil. Vijay is sometimes portrayed as the villain, going back to a long-ago cheating accusation.
