Sports Casting Call: Entourage
Here's the fifth edition of our monthly feature in which we pair characters from a TV show with sports figures. This month we cast Entourage.
Vincent Chase
Derek Jeter
Vince has all the money, fame, looks and ladies a young guy could want, though lately he's been a bit of a prima donna (witness his Queens Boulevard blow-up). Yankee icon Jeter is as smooth as they come on and off the field, though some critics say he's overrated -- especially if they root for the team that plays near Queens Boulevard.
Johnny Drama
Jeff Weaver
Johnny Drama was the first Chase brother to make it in Hollywood with his Viking Quest role. These days, though, younger sibling Vince is the major star while Drama's career is stalled. Weaver was a former No. 1 draft pick who oozed potential, so it had to hurt when the Angels cast him aside this year for younger brother Jered, a phenom who's 7-0.
Eric Murphy
Jim Leyland
E doesn't have Vince's acting talent but his level-headedness as a manager makes him a productive Hollywood player; he might be the only person that the young star really trusts and will listen to. Leyland didn't have much talent as a player (.222 minor league average) but the young, loaded Tigers certainly listen to his every word.
Turtle
Jack Haley
While Turtle is an affable sort, he's only living the good life because he was lucky enough to be Vince's childhood friend. Haley won a ring with the Bulls in 1996 while appearing in just one game. His real role was to keep pal Dennis Rodman from imploding. We wouldn't be surprised if Haley also served as The Worm's chauffeur.
Ari Gold
Drew Rosenhaus
The foul-mouthed Ari talks a blue streak on behalf of his clients, which helps make him a rich man. Rosenhaus, sports' reigning bad-boy agent, woofs so much on his clients' behalf that we might almost believe that Terrell Owens is a victim rather than a team-killing cancer. (Almost.) Big difference: At least Ari's entertaining.
Lloyd
Greg Anderson
As Ari's loyal assistant, Lloyd puts up with verbal put-downs while dodging the occasional projectile. In the Hollywood system, though, Lloyd can hope for a payoff down the line. It's not clear what Anderson, Barry Bonds' trainer and childhood friend, might get from sticking behind the Giants slugger except more time in the slammer.
Sloan
Paula Creamer
As the beautiful daughter of a rich man, Sloane could coast through life but doesn't. Still, she might regret suggesting that threesome. Rather than focusing on marketing deals, Creamer concentrates on performing (two LPGA wins). She likely regrets being lumped in with women's golf's young threesome of Michelle Wie and Morgan Pressel.
Terrance
Michael Jordan
Terence was once Ari's boss and mentor but was too competitive to allow him to become an equal. He fired Ari and now hopes to block his latest endeavor. As a Wizards exec, Jordan made Kwame Brown a No. 1 pick. Rather than nurture him, however, Jordan returned to the court and so belittled Brown that his confidence was shot.
Mrs. Ari
Mia Hamm
Mrs. Ari generally allows her husband to be the public face of the Gold family though she's the one with the real money. Since her retirement as a player Hamm has ceded the spotlight to husband Nomar Garciaparra, but with all that Nike cash she might be the real breadwinner.
Shauna
Lee Elia
While Shauna might be as cuddly as a porcupine and swears like a sailor, the publicist consistently stands behind her client. The former Cubs manager uttered one of rants in baseball history, though at its root he was just asking the fans to lay off his players.
