Sports Casting Call: The Office
Here's the sixth edition of our monthly feature in which we pair characters from a TV show with sports figures. This month, we stop by The Office.
Michael Scott
Ron Zook
Michael is full of energy and wants to be liked, but his professional judgment is often called into question. Zook was so fired up to be Florida's head coach that he'd join his players' weight-lifting sessions, but questions about his sideline judgment soon sent him packing. He's since resurfaced at Illinois, the Scranton of Big 10 football.
Dwight Schrute
Peter Angelos
Dwight relishes authority (the assistant to the regional manager was also a volunteer deputy sheriff) though, honestly, he's deluded. He does, however, have a nice bobblehead. Former lawyer Angelos was sharp in business but doesn't have a head for baseball. Somehow, the Orioles even screwed up Brian Roberts Bobblehead Night.
Pam Beesly
Freddy Sanchez
Pam is stuck in a both a job and a relationship below her abilities (she's a talented artist but answers phones) and looks (she's the College Mailbag Crush, of course). Sanchez is a great-looking hitter (.344) who's stuck on the Pirates, where he has even less of a chance of getting a ring than Pam does with Roy.
Jim Halpert
David Garrard
Jim has more to offer professionally but feels so stunted in the Scranton office that he rarely bothers. He has long suffered his crush on Pam in silence but finally made a big move in the season finale. The Jaguars' backup QB is stuck behind Byron Leftwich even though he was 5-1 as a starter in 2005 and can't move up the depth chart.
Ryan Howard
Ryan Howard
Was there even a decision here? The Office's Ryan, a.k.a. the Intern, was a stellar rookie and has developed even more since then. He should never have gotten mixed up with Kelly. The Phillies' Ryan was last year's Rookie of the Year and this season's slugging phenomenon. He's currently hitting better than even the great Kelly Leak.
Angela Martin
Terrell Owens
Though Angela is a hard and effective worker, her odd habits and outbursts upset workplace dynamics. She thinks green is a "whorish" color, and refused to accept the "Tight Ass" award. T.O. plays hard and well, but his occasional tantrums put his franchise on edge. He felt used while wearing Eagles green, and refused to practice with a tight hamstring.
Kevin Malone
Adrian Beltre
Kevin is an indifferent performer around the office. He's overweight and he generally displays a happy grin. He is a noted gambler, once earning a bracelet at the World Series of Poker. Seattle busted in its gamble to give big money to Beltre, who has gotten fat and happy with the large contract while underperforming.
Meredith Palmer
Joe Cullen
Meredith drinks too much and sometimes likes to get naked when she's tipsy, such as when she disrobed in Michael's office during the Christmas party. We must confess that we'd never heard of Lions assistant coach Cullen until this week, but he allegedly shares the same drinking-and-stripping affliction.
Roy Anderson
Ryan Leaf
Roy is a big lug from the loading dock who takes his girlfriend, Pam, for granted. He's not interested in bettering himself and doesn't want Pam to improve her lot, either. Leaf was a big lug from Washington State who took his NFL career for granted until it was quickly taken away. To his credit, he's trying to rebound as a college assistant.
Jan Levinson
Chris Webber
Jan is a solid pro who's generally smart and in control, but it will take her a long time to live down her horrendous mistake of hooking up with Michael. She might learn from Webber, who had to overcome a similarly epic brain freeze with the timeout disaster in the NCAA final to forge a solid pro career.
