Monday Morning QB (cont.)Posted: Monday December 11, 2006 8:53AM; Updated: Monday December 11, 2006 12:01PM Ten Things I Think I Think
1. I think these are my quick-hit thoughts of Week 14: a. Put the stopwatch on Chris Berman's Two-Minute Drill the other morning. Five minutes, five seconds. Not that I mind; this is a consistently entertaining piece of TV. But it's morphed into a halftime show. b. Men in suits: 3-1 this year, with only the Packers' upset of Mike Nolan's Niners scarring the record. c. Weinke. Stinky. d. Next year, when the NFL puts its late-season schedule of games together, it might be a good idea to avoid December games in Cleveland, Philly, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, the Meadowlands and Foxboro. That game the other night had to be brutal for the fans, 20 degrees with a 7-degree wind chill. Imagine sitting in a meaningless game in those conditions. The Saturday night playoff game is one thing; I understand the thirst for ratings on those games, but the NFL has enough game sites to avoid subjecting their true paying customers to abuse like that. e. Great story by ESPN's Greg Garber on the art of the stiff-arm. Really good football stuff in it, including Tiki Barber's admission that he learned it from Emmitt Smith and that the best thing about the stiff-arm is discarding the oncoming tackler's lead (or tackling) arm so he can't get a good grip on you. f. Who dresses Moose Johnston, exactly? g. FOX must have 16 cutaways showing disdain by Plaxico Burress and Jeremy Shockey after Eli Manning incompletions. Expressive fellows. h. Sebastian Janikowski hit the left upright three times in the past two games. Three times! i. Janikowski had a streak of five missed field goals broken in Cincinnati. Five! Nice first-round pick. j. Yes, that was taunting, Mike McKenzie. What are you doing yapping at Terrell Owens with the officials staring right at you? k. What a great half of defensive football by the Saints in the first half, not including the long touchdown run by Julius Jones. l. How is anyone going to beat the Chargers? 2. I think, not to drone on about Brees' qualifications for MVP, this is a nice measure of his worthiness: Can you name the two Saints' backup quarterbacks? Answer below. Clue on the third-stringer: Don Knotts. 3. I think this is what I didn't like about Week 14: a. The Browns are 1-10 against AFC Central foes under Romeo Crennel. That is unfathomable. They've now lost to the Steelers by 4, 20, 41 and 13 points, to Cincinnati by 15, 30, 14 and 3. Oh-for-8 against the Steelers and Bengals. Ridiculous. b. Thought of this while watching the Steelers' rout of the Browns: You know what worries me about Crennel's teams? Even with injuries, there's enough talent there not only to be better, but also to compete against the best teams in the league. They were absolutely non-competitive for most of that game the other night. How does a Crennel team allow a running game to steamroll it like that? c. Speaking of hard things to understand, how in the world, on the first play of the game, can Jacksonville safety Gerald Sensabaugh give Marvin Harrison a four-yard cushion to make his 996th career catch? d. Good thing Tony Dungy emphasized wrapping up with his tacklers in practice last week. First two Jacksonville rushes: 76 yards by Fred Taylor, 18 and a touchdown by Maurice Jones-Drew. e. How'd you not recover that Giants' fumble at the goal line, Shaun Williams? f. Look up the definition of out of sync, and you'll see the logo of the New England Patriots. They have the look of a team that's just lost too many good players. g. Can the Panthers, for once, play to their ability? I know they have major cornerback problems, but they're the most disappointing team in the league. h. Stop the presses: Tony Romo completed four passes in the first half of a football game. 4. I think the Bengals have only one choice, following the eighth player arrest in the last six months (DE Frostee Rucker, spousal abuse; LB A.J. Nicholson, burglary; WR Chris Henry, DWI; DT Matthias Askew, resisting arrest; G Eric Steinbach, operating a boat under the influence; LB Odell Thurman, DWI; WR Reggie McNeal, resisting arrest and drug possession; and Saturday, CB Deltha O'Neal, DWI): Coach Marvin Lewis must fire the next player who is arrested and convicted of any charge north of jaywalking. Obviously either Lewis is not stressing discipline stuff enough, or these knuckleheads aren't listening.
