Paul Mara was penalized in Thursday's game against Edmonton for using an illegally curved stick. Mara said he didn't know he was using an illegal stick, but coach Wayne Gretzky wasn't buying it. "There's no reason to have an illegally curved stick in this day and age," Gretzky said. Maybe equally bad is the fact the Coyotes have put a puck into their own net for an opposing goal in three straight games.

Is Dwayne Roloson as good as gone in Minnesota? "The writing's on the wall," Roloson told the Pioneer Press. "I just feel one of us (Manny Fernandez being the other goaltender) is going to be gone, and it's a sign something's happening." If you're curious, Fernandez is 18-7-3 with a 2.02 GAA while Roloson is 5-14-1 with a 2.99 GAA.

No one is more bummed about the Bruins' horrendous season than comedian and hockey fan Denis Leary, who felt the decision to trade Joe Thornton was a bad one. "At some point, they're gonna sit down and realize that was one of the worst trades in the history of the game," Leary told the Boston Herald.

There's no getting around the fact the Panthers are a terrible road team. While the Panthers are a very respectible 13-6-3 at home, they're just 5-18-4 on the road, with 12 of those road defeats coming by one goal. What also hurts is the fact Florida has been shut out six times this season -- five of those on the road.

You can't say the Isles aren't a giving team. Saturday's loss to New Jersey marked the second straight game in which the Islander loss extended the opponent's winning streak to nine games. The Hurricanes reached that mark Thursday with a 4-3 victory over New York.

Before Monday's loss, the Capitals owned their first four-game winning streak since Dec. 19-27, 2002. Their reward? Coach Glen Hanlon canceled Sunday's practice. The board in the locker room read: "Day off. Spend your money." They're still buried in the standings, but the Caps aren't a team you can take lightly -- especially if you don't have a solid blueliner to shadow Alex Ovechkin.

After facing 48 shots and allowing seven goals in Wednesday's loss to Nashville, Pascal Leclaire was given a pep talk by captain Adam Foote. While it would be hard to console anyone after they had just given up seven goals, it's understandable considering the 23-year-old netminder has faced 218 shots in his past five starts -- 43.6 per game.

Chicago has won just three of its last 18 games overall, and only two of its last 13 at home. It's especially bad for the Blackhawks' leading scorer, Tyler Arnason, who was recently a healthy scratch. That's right ... the team's leading scorer was benched. Arnason has 11 goals and 23 assists in 48 games, but just one goal and three assists in his last 11.

The Penguins, losers of nine straight and 10 of their last 11, are finding it nearly impossible to score goals these days. Pittsburgh has gotten more than two goals only twice during their losing streak and had a recent stretch where it scored just one goal in three consecutive games.

The Blues lost in a shootout Friday to Columbus, giving St. Louis a nine-game losing streak while dropping it to 5-13 in one-goal games. But good news could be on the way, as Keith Tkachuk was cleared Friday to return to practice. The forward has missed 17 games with a broken knuckle.
