NHL Power Rankings
Rank LW Team
1 1 With his 690th goal, Steve Yzerman not only helped the Wings clinch a playoff spot but he passed Mario Lemieux for eighth on the all-time list. "I don't really know the significance," Yzerman said. "If anything, it shows how good [Lemieux] is. He played almost five years less than I did." Now with 691 goals, Stevie Y is just four away from passing Mark Messier.

Ottawa Senators (49-17-7)
There might be a couple chinks in the armor. The Senators have lost six straight shootouts, going 16 attempts without scoring. But the bigger issue could be the loss of defenseman Chris Phillips, who will be out 2-4 weeks with a twisted knee. On a good note, Ray Emery finished March with 12 wins (12-2-2) to tie the Flyers' Bernie Parent, who had 12 wins in a month in 1974.

Dallas Stars (49-21-4)
Seeing that the Stars are all but locked into the No. 2 spot in the West, it might be time for some ailing/aging players to get rest down the stretch. One player who could use the time off is Mike Modano, who ranks 18th among centers in playing time at 19:47. The captain is one of only three centers to average more than three minutes per game on the penalty kill and more than five on the power play.
Last Week: 1-1-1
4 4 With the help of a 26-point January, the Hurricanes clinched the Southeast. But a troubling statistic is that the team is just 5-5-2 since Erik Cole went down with a broken neck March 4. Cole's absence has put added pressure on Eric Staal, who has responded in a big way. The 21-year-old center is just eight points away from 100 heading into the week.

Buffalo Sabres (45-23-6)
Despite their recent struggles, the Sabres are still confident -- at least the front office, which announced first-round playoff tickets will go on sale April 10. Of course they better hope the team doesn't lay more eggs like Saturday's 7-0 loss to Toronto. "That's the worse loss I've ever been a part of," Jay McKee said. Buffalo had been 4-1 against the Leafs this season before that debacle.
Last Week: 1-2-1
6 6 The Predators took a huge hit when Steve Sullivan went down with a strained groin. Listed day-to-day, the nine-year veteran is second on the team to Paul Kariya with 68 points. At least the schedule makers were nice, as Nashville plays seven straight against teams not heading to the playoffs before ending with (gulp) the Red Wings.

New York Rangers (41-21-12)
Jaromir Jagr notched four points Wednesday night to pass Hall of Famer Jean Ratelle on the team's all-time scoring list, but Henrik Lundqvist wasn't about to be overshadowed. The 24-year-old won his 30th game (30-10-9) to break the franchise mark for victories by a rookie that had been held by Jim Henry (1941-42) and Johnny Bower (1953-54).

8 9
Calgary Flames (42-24-8)
With Miikka Kiprusoff leading the charge, the Flames won five of eight (5-1-2) in the season series against rival Edmonton. That may be nice and all, but if Calgary hopes to do anything in the playoffs, it needs a few key players to get healthy and stay strong on the penalty kill; the Flames are 19-5-3 when not allowing a power-play goal.
Last Week: 3-0-0
9 7 Simon Gagne, Peter Forsberg and Antero Niittymaki grab most of the headlines in Philly -- and with good reason. But what about the season veteran Mike Knuble is having? The 33-year-old winger ranks third on the team with 60 points (a new career high) and second with 31 goals (also a career best).
Last Week: 1-2-0
10 10 The Ducks may be that one team no one wants to face come the playoffs. That's because they remain one of the hottest squads around, going 18-6-2 since Jan. 25 while setting a franchise record with 11 wins in March. And after a slow start, blueliner Scott Niedermayer has found his comfort zone in Anaheim, notching a career-high 58 points.
