With Monday Night Football moving to cable, do you think ABC's new Saturday-night NCAA series might place college football more in the forefront for American audiences? I think the Saturday-night idea, while hell for sportswriters on deadline, will be great for college football, so long as the matchups are intriguing. ABC has always done this for September nonconference games, before its regular fall lineup kicks in, and the games usually do well. Last year's Texas-Ohio State game drew a phenomenal 9.9 million viewers, more than twice that of a typical Saturday-afternoon broadcast. However, Saturday night is typically the lightest TV-watching night of the week, as many people go out, and much to the chagrin of those of us who prefer college football, the NFL has a stranglehold on the national conscience that won't be loosened anytime soon. I don't know whether Sunday nights on NBC or Monday nights on ESPN are going to become the new MNF, but I'd be willing to guess the ratings for both will still dwarf anything the college games can produce. More likely, Saturday Night Football will become just something else for people to have on in the background at bars. Why are teams such as Michigan State, Clemson and Georgia Tech so inconsistent? These teams beat Notre Dame, Florida State and Miami, respectively, last year -- and yet the Spartans finished 5-6, Clemson lost to Wake Forest and Georgia Tech lost to Utah by four touchdowns. You never know what to expect from these three teams in any game for the past four years. I can answer that question in one word: coaching. I can tell you that when my much-anticipated second-annual ranking of the nation's best and worst coaches comes out next month, there may very well be two coaches from the aforementioned teams on one of the lists. Guess which one. Kudos for your response to Brian in Birmingham regarding his pal's wedding. Back in 1999, I attended my favorite cousin's wedding, which took place on the same day that USC beat UCLA for the first time in seven years. While the wedding was fun, this USC grad is still kicking herself for missing such a huge event. Brian should stay home, watch the game and send his friend the most expensive present on their gift registry! Marielle, I don't know whether you are married, but you probably just found yourself several hundred potential husbands among the readers of this column. Speaking of which ... it's time to unveil the Mailbag's new celebrity crush for 2006. Kudos to all of you for chiming in with a wide variety of outstanding candidates (though those of you who nominated Eva Longoria and Stacy Keibler aren't yet grasping the concept of "under the radar"). I've narrowed it down to these five finalists: How about J.D.'s new lady-doc friend on Scrubs, Elizabeth Banks? Way under the radar, but super-hot. Ah, yes. Good choice. You might also remember her as the nympho book-store employee from The 40-Year-Old Virgin. Am I crazy, or does she have enormous teeth? Here's a nominee for your under-the-radar hottie. How about Sloan from Entourage? I think her real name is Emmanuelle Chiriqui. She's amazing, even though her interest in "E" is slightly incredulous. Agreed. E is out-punting his coverage by about 30 yards on that one. Emmanuelle is a bona fide hottie, but she lost some points by starring in that Usher movie. For the Mailbag celebrity crush, how about Amy Smart? I don't think any of us who saw Road Trip will soon forget Amy, and, like the aforementioned Elizabeth Banks, she once played one of J.D.'s love interests on Scrubs, the aptly named Tasty Coma Wife. But I kind of feel like her career peaked about four years ago. Your next crush should definitely be the delightful Ginnifer Goodwin, the actress who plays third wife Margine on the HBO series Big Love. I'm a Big Love addict and definitely have a soft spot for Margine. Unfortunately, I can't get over the suspicion that somehow the character is cuter than the actress. All of these are good suggestions, but they still don't feel like the one. I wish someone out there could help me pinpoint the perfect Mailbag girl. What about you, Adam from Atlanta? Here is your crush: Under the radar ... pretty but not too pretty ... Jenna Fischer. She plays Pam on The Office. Jackpot! The truth of the matter is, I think I've had a crush on Pam for nearly as long as Jim, and from the interviews I've read, Jenna seems even sweeter than Pam. You've found my weakness, people. Exploit it wisely.
