Week 14 Pickoff
No. 4 Florida (11-1) at No. 8 Arkansas (10-2)
Arkansas RB Darren McFadden is fast. Really fast. On Saturday night, he will play inside the Georgia Dome on the same artificial field that fellow speedsters Justin Vincent (2003 SEC title game) and Steve Slaton (2006 Sugar Bowl) have treated like their own private treadmill. Try not to blink.
Arkansas 24, Florida 20
No. 2 USC (10-1) at UCLA (6-5)
Before you go automatically chalking this one up to the Trojans, allow me to take you back to 2004, same field, same teams -- 11-0 USC against 6-4 UCLA. Reggie Bush inexplicably fumbles with 59 seconds left, but the Bruins can't close the 29-24 gap. Just thought I should point that out.
USC 27, UCLA 25
Hard as this is to believe, this is the Huskers' first appearance in the Big 12 title game since 1999. This will be the Sooners' fifth appearance during the ensuing span. Bill Callahan may ultimately lead Nebraska all the way back to the top, but this year, I wouldn't want to bet against Bob Stoops.
Oklahoma 26, Nebraska 22
Common sense says Pat White and Steve Slaton redeem themselves for last week's USF disaster, but the Scarlet Knights have a heck of a run defense. They're playing for a BCS berth. Greg Schiano has pulled off bigger miracles than this. Make me pick it. Make me pick it! Errr ... I can't do it.
West Virginia 30, Rutgers 27
For all of you who wonder why the Big Ten and Pac-10 don't have championship games ... Exhibit A. Nothing against either team -- both sides certainly earned their spots in Jacksonville -- but why do I have a feeling there will be an unexpected surge of dudes Christmas shopping at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Wake Forest 17, Georgia Tech 13
Oregon State (8-4) at No. 24 Hawaii (10-2)
A little midnight snack from the WAC. Heisman voters looking for a suitable third candidate might want to take an afternoon nap or set the TiVo. Something tells me Colt Brennan is going to put on a show for all the insomniacs. So much so that I've had a change of heart since Tuesday.
Hawaii 38, Oregon State 37
Southern Miss (8-4) at Houston (9-3)
With Troy Smith's Heisman chase, Brady Quinn's NFL hoopla, Colt Brennan's NCAA record smashing and John Beck's heroics, Kevin Kolb is the forgotten QB. All the Houston senior has done is complete 68 percent of his passes for 3,165 yards, 25 TDs and three INTs. What do you think?
Houston 35, Southern Miss 24
Army (3-8) at Navy (8-3)
Darn you, BCS. I really want to go to an Army-Navy game one day. I feel somewhat negligent to my beat and my country that I've never been. But something tells me we're never again going to have a Championship Saturday that doesn't have national championship implications.
Navy 24, Army 13
Last week: 5-3.
Overall: 61-43.
