NEW YORK (SI.com) -- The wife of Elijah Dukes filed for a restraining order against her husband and said the Tampa Bay rookie outfielder has made her fear for her life, The St. Petersburg Times reported Wednesday. According to the report, NiShea Gilbert, 26, a teacher at Beth Shields Middle School in Ruskin, Fla., told the court that her husband threatened to kill her and sent a photo of a gun to her cell phone. Gilbert played a voice mail message for the Times that she said came from Dukes: "You dead, dawg. I ain't even bulls-------. Your kids, too." The wife of the Tampa native has filed requests for protection against him twice, the Times said. A court hearing on her latest request is May 30. Dukes was approached by Times reporters after batting practice Tuesday evening but declined to discuss the allegations. "I'm just going to play ball, that's it," he said. "I've got to go. I've got a video game to finish." The couple have been going through a divorce. Devil Rays GM Andrew Friedman said it was too early to comment on the matter. "The only knowledge we had was that this was a messy divorce," he told the Times. "But obviously not the extent that she's stating." Dukes, 22, is batting .231 with eight home runs this season. | |||||||||||||
