The Philadelphia Phillies bolstered their rotation by acquiring right-hander Kyle Lohse from the Cincinnati Reds for minor-league pitcher Matt Maloney on Monday.

Lohse, 6-12 with a 4.58 ERA, was considered one of the better starting pitchers available in a very weak starting-pitching market.

Earlier, the Atlanta Braves enhanced their chances in the NL East by acquiring star first baseman Mark Teixeira from the Texas Rangers. Atlanta also may be on the verge of landing Kansas City Royals reliever Octavio Dotel, as well.

The Phillies, who have one of baseball's best lineups, have been aiming to improve their pitching situation.

Lohse is 60-74 with a 4.83 ERA in eight seasons with Minnesota and Cincinnati, which acquired him from the Twins at the July 31 trade deadline last year. He is making $4.2 million his year and is eligible for free agency after the World Series.

"I'm a little excited, happy to be going to a team in the race. But I'm disappointed we couldn't get it done here. So it's a little bit of mixed emotions," Lohse said.

Asked whether he'd pitched better than his statistics indicate, Lohse said: "I feel that way, but my numbers are what they are. ... I had a couple bad games here and there that kind of skewed the numbers."

The left-handed Maloney, who is 23, was 9-7 with a 3.94 ERA in 21 starts at Double-A Reading, striking out 115 in 125 2-3 innings. He was the South Atlantic League pitcher of the year in 2006, going 16-9 with a 2.03 ERA for Lakewood.

"Left-handed, good size, knows how to pitch," Reds Gm Wayne Krivsky said. "We're excited to have him."

Maloney will report to Double-A Chattanooga.
