Mets, D'backs in hunt for CorderoPosted: Tuesday July 31, 2007 1:46PM; Updated: Tuesday July 31, 2007 1:58PM The Mets and Diamondbacks are bidding for Nationals closer Chad Cordero, whose name keeps popping up in trade talks as the 4 p.m. EDT nonwaiver deadline approaches. The Mets offered fine pitching prospect Phil Humber for Cordero but have been firm to this point that they will not surrender any of their top four prospects: outfielders Carlos Gomez, Fernando Martinez and Lastings Milledge, and pitcher Mike Pelfrey. Cordero was originally drafted by Mets GM Omar Minaya. The Mets tried to get Eric Gagne earlier but appear to be targeting Cordero now. The Diamondbacks have several excellent prospects they could offer. One name that has been mentioned in deals lately has been their outfield prospect Carlos Quentin. Teams have been complaining that the Nationals are asking too much for Cordero, but with impact pitchers mostly unavailable, a team may have to overpay to get him.
