The Skinny
AP
Perhaps the most fun matchup of the first round, this series pits Warriors coach Don Nelson (right) against his former team and protégé Avery Johnson. Throw in the fact that the Warriors enter as one of the NBA's hottest clubs -- and that they swept the season series with Dallas 3-0 -- and it's safe to say the Mavs would have rather faced just about any other team. However, the playoffs are a different story and Dallas is too balanced, deep and experienced. Given the chance to prepare for Nelson's small-ball lineup, the Mavs should be able to come up with ways to exploit Golden State's lack of defense and rebounding. Plus, the Warriors might be spent a bit emotionally after having won nine of 10 games to end their 12-year playoff drought.
Key Matchup
Dirk Nowitzki vs. Baron Davis
They play different positions, but don't be surprised if the 6-foot-3 Davis defends the 7-foot Nowitzki at times in this series. Nelson loves experimenting with unconventional matchups, and many believe the best way to defend Nowitzki is to use a smaller player on him. Beyond the Xs and Os, these two stars are the clear-cut leaders and go-to guys for their respective teams. If the Warriors hope to pull off the upset, they will need Davis to have a big series and Nowitzki to wilt under pressure.
X-Factor
AP
Mavs: DeSagana Diop
The 7-foot reserve center could play a big role against the Warriors' small lineup that features 6-9 Al Harrington at center. Unlike starter Erick Dampier, Diop (right, with Nowitzki) can get out and cover Harrington on the perimeter. With Dampier bothered by a sore shoulder, Diop's ability to defend and get inside for easy baskets against the thin Golden State interior will be critical.

Warriors: Jason Richardson
The 6-6 guard has scorched the Mavs in the past with last-second three-pointers and crowd-inspiring dunks. If he gets on a roll, he could ignite his team and give them confidence. The good news for the Mavs is they have two ace defenders in Josh Howard and Devean George to throw at him if he starts cooking.
