'I gave my word'Top prepster Beasley still committed to Kansas StatePosted: Sunday April 8, 2007 1:30PM; Updated: Monday April 9, 2007 2:08AM
Star forward Michael Beasley is "70 percent sure'' that he will fulfill his commitment to play for Kansas State next season, he told SI.com Sunday. Beasley's status has been in question since the surprise departure last week of coach Bob Huggins, who after one season at Kansas State announced that he was leaving to become coach at West Virginia. Kansas State has promoted assistant Frank Martin to head coach as the replacement for Huggins. Recruiting services rate Beasley as the No. 1 high school player in the country. After producing eight points (3-for-15 from the floor) and nine rebounds in the Nike Hoop Summit on Saturday in Memphis, Beasley told SI.com that he was leaning toward seeking a release from his letter of intent so he could play at the University of Memphis. But that view changed Sunday. "I'm committed to the school, not to the coach,'' Beasley said. "I'm committed to the school, and I gave my word that I would play for Kansas State.'' Beasley's mother, Fatima Smith told The Topeka Capital-Journal and The Kansas City Star that her son would honor the national letter of intent he signed with the Wildcats in November. "The drama is over," she said. "Yes, Michael will be there [at K-State] for the next school year." His mother said she thought all the Wildcats' recruits -- including 6-1 point guard Jacob Pullen, of Mayfield, Ill., and 6-3 shooting guard Fred Brown, of West Palm Beach, Fla. -- would honor their commitments. "The rest of the team will be able to stay together," she said. "It's a big thing." Smith lives near Washington, D.C., and said she found a house in Manhattan and plans to move there this summer so her family can be close to Beasley.
