Top Five Players from Monday

1. Kenny Boynton, Team Breakdown (Reebok)

Boynton, a rising junior guard, may not know where he's going to high school next year, but he can certainly play. He proved again yesterday he belongs in any discussion for best scoring guard in the Class of 2009. Boynton, who is considering Oak Hill and others for school next year, hit from the perimeter, off the dribble and finished in traffic.

2. Jrue Holiday, Pump N Run (adidas) Campbell Hall (North Hollywood, Calif.)

Rated the No. 3 rising senior by RISE, Holiday showed why yesterday, pumping in 30 points to lead his squad past a strong Atlanta Celtics team. When the Celtics made a run, Holiday stayed under control and made the big play to help seal the game. He also got a lot of help from...

3. David Wear, Pump N Run (adidas) Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.)

Wear is one of the most talented players in his class, his only problem is consistency. Well, yesterday he brought his A game. Making nearly every big shot he took, Wear was the perfect complement to Holiday's all-around game. When these two are going like this, Pump N Run is tough to beat

4. Brandon Jennings, Belmont Shore (Reebok) Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.)

On the plus side, Jennings's game looks sharper than ever. He has unlimited range on his 3-point shot, a ridiculous handle and a knack for finding the open teammate. But sometimes, his emotions get the best of him, and they did at times yesterday. He drew a technical in the loss to King of the Court and his problems with the officials seemed to throw him off his game at times. But when he was on, he was spectacular, finishing with 35 points. On Sunday, he scored 30 points in one game and had 18 points, eight boards and seven assists in another. But yesterday, he wasn't quite as good as...

5. Delvon Roe, King of the Court (Reebok) St. Edward (Lakewood, Ohio)

Roe might be the most fun player to watch in the Class of 2008 from a pure basketball perspective. He isn't flashy, but he does everything right. It was a thing of beauty to watch him set up on the perimeter when guarded by a center and drive into the lane for easy baskets and then post up against smaller defenders. He also ran the break and collected several second-chance baskets.

Five Under-the-Radar Stars

1. Melquan Bolding, New York Panthers (Reebok) Archbishop Stepinac (White Plains, N.Y.)

Bolding has already committed to Louisville, but when thinking of elite NYC players, names like Lance Stephenson of Lincoln (Brooklyn, N.Y.) or Sylven Landesberg of Holy Cross (Flushing, N.Y.) probably come to mind. But in his team's extremely physical 77-66 win over the Baltimore Stars yesterday, Bolding was the story. While his Panthers' teammate Landesberg struggled on 2-for-9 shooting, Bolding scored from the field (7-for-14) and the line (7-for-11) and set the tone with a tough play that enabled the Panthers to prevail.

2. Eric Frederick, Texas Blue Chips Elite (Reebok) Cornerstone Christian (San Antonio, Texas)

Teammate Quincy Acy gets the most pub, but Frederick is just as important to his team's success. He's a monster on the defensive end, finishing yesterday morning's game with three steals, two blocked shots and countless other deflections. His active hands routinely disrupted the D1 Greyhounds' offense and were a huge, but underrated, part of the Blue Chips' 60-57 victory.

3. Mfon Udofia, Worldwide Renegades Black (Reebok) Miller Grove (Lithonia, Ga.)

Udofia, a 6-foot-3 rising junior guard, may have been overshadowed a bit by opponent Kenny Boynton in yesterday's matchup, but he shouldn't have been. Udofia is a great scorer who can fill it up from anywhere. He scored on mid-range jumpers and by getting into the paint off the dribble.

4. Sampson Carter, M33M (adidas) Hamilton (Memphis, Tenn.)

There aren't many who can shoot it better than Carter. The rising senior forward had it going against Chicago Express yesterday. At 6-foot-8 and with unlimited 3-point range, Carter projects as a nice small forward on the next level. He hasn't gotten a lot of attention yet, but that could change with more 3-point shooting displays like yesterday.

5. Anthony Burns, King of the Court (Reebok) Solon (Solon, Ohio)

Burns went head-to-head with the better known Brandon Jennings yesterday and came close to earning a draw. Jennings might have had the better statistical game, but Burns made it close enough that teammates like Delvon Roe could take over. If Burns and fellow guard Frankie Dobbs keep playing like this, King of the Court might take the Reebok crown.

Mr. Big Shot

Dion Dixon, Chicago Express (adidas) Crane Tech (Chicago)

Chicago hoop fans are used to seeing No. 23 make game-winning shots. Add another one to the list. Dixon's 3-pointer at the buzzer gave the Express an 84-81 victory and spoiled a great comeback by M33M. Despite trailing by double digits for most of the second half, M33M tied the game with 4.3 seconds left on Sampson Carter's 3-pointer. The game looked headed for overtime, but Dixon was able to get off a clean look from just behind the arc at the buzzer and he swished it.

Dunk of the Day

Isaiah Armwood, Baltimore Stars (Reebok) Montrose Christian (Rockville, Md.)

Armwood, an immensely talented forward in the Class of 2009, didn't have a great game against the New York Panthers (3-for-11 shooting, 7 points), but he did bring the house down with his one-handed, alley-oop slam. Not only was it a sweet dunk, but it came at a crucial time. Armwood's dunk tied the game at 49 with 7:40 to go, but the Panthers surged ahead for the 77-66 win.

News and Notes

The DC Triple Threat took home the inaugural Create or Finish Cup at the Reebok Summer Championships last night with a 61-52 win over Illinois Wolves Carpenter. Triple Threat was led throughout the three-game, two-day tournament by the Georgetown-bound duo of DeMatha's (Hyattsville, Md.) Chris Braswell and Bishop O'Connell's (Arlington, Va.) Jason Clark ... Dallas Mavericks playmaker Devin Harris was on hand at adidas, actively coaching the team named in his honor, the D-Harris Superstars ... Memphis freshman Derrick Rose was on hand watching his former squad, the Chicago Express, all afternoon... RISE's No. 1 player in the Class of 2009, Artesia's Renardo Sidney, struggled in his first game of the day. Sidney seemed a little sluggish and may have had a problem with the 8 a.m. start time.
