What to Watch for on Thursday

While a potential Atlanta Celtics-Pump N Run final is the juiciest matchup, there are plenty of other games that have people buzzing.

At The Main Event, the New York Gauchos, led by the Rice (Harlem, N.Y.) trio of Kemba Walker, Durand Scott and Chris Fouch and Paterson (N.J.)Catholic guard Jordan Theodore, are two wins away from possibly meeting Team Texas in the finals.

Heading into the week, the Gauchos and Team Texas looked to be the two most talented teams at The Main Event, and that's held true so far. Team Texas is led by Oak Hill guard Willie Warren and Verdigris (Okla.) guard Rotnei Clarke.

At Reebok, it wouldn't get any more exciting than a Belmont Shore-Team Breakdown matchup. That would mean a dream backcourt duel between Brandon Jennings and Breakdown's Kenny Boynton. If both players play in the quarterfinals and semifinals the way they did on Wednesday, there's a good chance it will happen.

Top Five Players (Teammates Edition)

1. Brandon Jennings and Jeff Withey, Belmont Shore (Reebok)

We've already told you all about Jennings' ridiculous all-around effort in the round of 16, but fellow Arizona commit Withey was pretty impressive in his own right. Both players put on a show for the Wildcats' coaching staff. Withey had 11 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks in the win over Grassroots Elite AAU. Withey, a rising senior at Horizon (San Diego), may not be your prototypical 7-footer in the paint, but he's a dominant shot-blocker and has a great touch for his size.

2. Kenny Boynton and Brandon Knight, Team Breakdown (Reebok)

Boynton's scoring display in a 77-71 win over the talented D1 Greyhounds was one of the best offensive performances of the week. The 6-foot-2 combo guard finished with 32 points on 10-for-18 shooting, including 7-for-11 from beyond the arc. Boynton got off to a fast start, scoring 16 points in the game's first eight minutes as Breakdown jumped out to a 25-12 lead and never looked back. Knight, a rising sophomore at Pine Crest (Fort Lauderdale), was the ideal Robin to Boynton's Batman. He scored 13 points and took the pressure off Boynton by handling the ball.

3. Mark McLaughlin and Peyton Siva, Seattle Rotary Select 1 (adidas)

Whenever his team needed a basket, either McLaughlin or Siva delivered. The Washington State-bound McLaughlin, a rising senior guard at Inglemoor (Kenmore, Wash.), showed off a smooth three-point stroke and a versatile offensive game. Siva, a rising junior point guard at Franklin (Seattle), did it all. He handled intense pressure from the T-Mac All-Stars, hit countless big three-pointers and got into the lane with ease. Every time T-Mac made a run, McLaughlin or Siva would hit a big shot to help Seattle Rotary to an 85-83 win.

4. Derrick Favors and Noel Johnson, Atlanta Celtics Black (adidas)

Things looked bleak for the Celtics for a long time in their first game on Wednesday. In the end, Favors and Johnson bailed them out. Favors had a team-high 18 points, none bigger than his tying three-point play with less than a minute left. Johnson finished with only nine points, but had the go-ahead bucket that helped the Celtics advance. Favors then had 27 points in an 82-72 win over M33M to reach the quarterfinals.

5. Tyreese Breshers and Deividas Dulkys, Branch West Team Reebok (Reebok)

This one came in a losing effort, but it was too good to leave out. In a 72-69 loss to Worldwide Renegades Black, Breshers and Dulkys accounted for 48 of their team's points. Breshers (19 points) did his damage in the paint, shooting 8-for-12 from the floor and also grabbing 12 rebounds. Dulkys (29 points), meanwhile, did his work on the perimeter, drilling five three-pointers and scoring from every angle.

Top Five Under-the-Radar Players

1. Junior Cadougan, Grassroots Elite AAU (Reebok)

Brandon Jennings may have stolen the show, but Cadougan had plenty of admirers with his play against Belmont Shore. The rising junior point guard from Community Christian (Stockbridge, Ga.) drew raves with his all-around play. He kept his squad in the game with 21 points and 12 assists. Cadougan is a stocky guard in the mold of Khalid El-Amin and is able to get to the basket as quickly and effectively as El-Amin did when he led UConn to a national title. In the morning game, a 61-58 win over the Richmond Squires, Cadougan had 21 points and seven boards.

2. Ray Shipman, Florida Rams (adidas)

Shipman will do whatever it takes to win. The Monsignor Pace (Opa Locka, Fla.) guard proved that in a clutch, 69-67 overtime win against 43 Hoops B.C. Carr. While the Florida-bound Shipman led the Rams with 21 points, it was the little things he did that make the difference. He earned an assist on the basket that sent the game into overtime with a perfect pass. In OT, he nailed a huge three-pointer and drained two free throws to ice it.

3. Justin Brownlee, Smyrna Stars (Reebok)

Brownlee, a rising senior forward at Covenant Christian (Loganville, Ga.) was the main reason the Stars advanced to Thursday's championship round against the favored DC Triple Threat. He set the tone midway through the first half with a few huge baskets and kept the pressure up throughout. With 19 points and five assists, Brownlee helped the Stars rally from an early double-digit deficit.

4. Jamal Fenton, T-Mac All-Stars (adidas)

Fenton's scoring outburst came in a losing cause. Fenton and the rest of the T-Mac All-Stars never quit in their 85-83 loss to Seattle Rotary Select 1, despite seeming out of it countless times. Every time Rotary looked to put them away, the All-Stars responded with a hoop, usually from Fenton. The rising junior guard out of Chavez (Houston) finished with 24 points, including five three-pointers, in the defeat.

5. Teondre Williams, Worldwide Renegades Black (Reebok) The Renegades scored a pair of impressive come-from-behind wins on Wednesday and Williams was a key component in both of them. In the morning game, a 72-69 victory over Branch West Team Reebok, Williams had team highs in points (17) and rebounds (7). In the nightcap, a 76-72 win over Texas BlueChips Elite, he again led a balanced attack with team highs in points (13) and boards (5). Williams, a rising senior guard out of Meadowcreek (Norcross, Ga.) has offers from the likes of Tennessee, Cincinnati, Alabama and Georgia.
