It appears that NASCAR's table may have been reset. On Thursday, Jim Hunter, NASCAR's vice president for corporate communications, paid a visit to USA Today's offices, where Hunter reportedly said the two biggest changes in the Chase would be more points for a victory and more than 10 drivers in the Chase field. Whatever NASCAR finally decides, it appears likely the announcement will come on the opening day of the Lowe's Motor Speedway media tour on Jan. 22. NASCAR officials say they've spent the past few weeks running the numbers to determine whether more points should be awarded to race winners. Atlanta Motor Speedway president Ed Clark said changes are needed, but worries that NASCAR, as it has in the past, will be conservative in its tweaks. It's been two years since it was announced that telecommunication companies Sprint and Nextel would merge. It's been about that long that rumors have persisted that the merger would scuttle the relationship of the company with NASCAR. In a recent chat with The Star, Sprint Nextel Corp. chairman, resident and chief executive officer Gary Forsee firmly waved off those rumors. [We're] hearing that Labor Ready will sponsor the No. 25 Hendrick Motorsports Chevy that Casey Mears in some form in 2007. Busch Series team owner Armando Fitz announced a partnership Wednesday with the Grand-Am Koni Challenge team co-owned by actor Patrick Dempsey. The two-car team will be known as Fitz Motorsports, and David Stremme will drive its renumbered No. 22 Dodge. The team plans to field a second car, though no drivers have been named. Bill Davis Racing (BDR) announced that Derrick Finley will serve as crew chief for the No. 36 OTC 360 team and driver Jeremy Mayfield. In addition, the team has added several key employees to its organization. Lester Building Systems, a backer of Tim Sauter's since 2004 in the American Speed Association and Busch Series, will follow the 42-year-old to the Craftsman Truck Series and Green Light Racing this season. Mike Bliss will return as driver of the No. 49 Dodges for BAM Racing with Lee McCall as his crew chief, the team announced. The team will also use engines from Evernham Motorsports this year.
