Ricky Rudd was a team owner at one time, too. He was asked if he'd recommend that as a career path. "I guess I wouldn't totally discourage him," Rudd said. "You learn a lot about people. I think before it's over with you probably have a psychology degree in dealing with people because that's what it's about." As Robert Yates struggled last season to find both a sponsor and driver to save his flagship No. 88 Ford, wife Carolyn grew tired of the stress it was putting on her husband. Even though Ricky Rudd had offered to drive for him, Yates was dragging his feet on a deal. Carolyn finally snapped. When she coincidentally ran into Rudd a few days later having breakfast at a Waffle House, she hired him on the spot. Ricky Rudd spent his sabbatical tending to his farm, mowing the lawn, hanging out with his family and occasionally racing go-karts. But when Tony Stewart called on Rudd to sub for him last June, the 50-year-old realized just how much he missed the competition. Dale Earnhardt Jr. said he plans on leaving the rest of the testing of the No. 8 Dale Earnhardt Inc. Chevy to sibling Kerry Earnhardt. Earnhardt Jr. seemed satisfied with his two days of testing, which wound up with him on top of the drafting chart Tuesday night. Nashville's Casey Atwood will not return to Brewco Motorsports this season, at least not as a full-time driver. The race team, based in Central City, Ky., has announced that Nextel Cup drivers Greg Biffle, Jamie McMurray and Ward Burton will share time in its two Busch Series cars. They also will continue their full-time Cup duties. Jeff Burton, along with Matt Kenseth and Ryan Newman are testing tires through today at Phoenix International Raceway. Burton said Tuesday's testing went well, and he was happy Goodyear presented "a lot of interesting options to look at." The International Race of Champions series still does not have a sponsor for 2007 and announced Tuesday it will delay the start of its season until one is found. That means there will be no IROC race during Speedweeks at Daytona. Jamie McMurray had the fastest lap Tuesday morning as testing continued at Daytona, running 184.090 mph, with Mike McLaughlin second in Tony Stewart's car at 183.981. Jimmie Johnson, Ricky Rudd and Tony Raines were next. Some teams did drafting in the afternoon session and - surprise, surprise -- Dale Earnhardt Jr. was fastest at 186.606 mph, with Casey Mears second and Tony Raines third. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
