In San Diego, Marty Schottenheimer is Donnie Edwards' champion. Unfortunately for Edwards, Schottenheimer has virtually no credibility with A.J. Smith, who in the last month has given two backup San Diego linebackers (Matt Wilhelm and Stephen Cooper) new contracts, sealing Edwards' fate. Among the numerous rumors flying around the ether regarding head coach Marty Schottenheimer's employment status is that he will retire if the Chargers win the Super Bowl. Schottenheimer loudly rejected that notion. "No way," he said. "I will not do that." Although Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has repeatedly said he wants Terrell Owens to return in 2007, a final decision probably will not be made until coach Bill Parcells decides if he is going to return next season. It's unlikely the Jets would part with a first-rounder for Chargers running back Michael Turner, but they could try to work out a trade. Also, they may select a running back in the draft, having a first-round (No. 26) and two second-round selections. One logical candidate to replace fired Giants defensive coordinator Tim Lewis is Dom Capers, the former Panthers and Texans coach who spent last season as the defensive coordinator for the Dolphins. Capers was Tom Coughlin's defensive coordinator with the Jaguars in 1999 and 2000. The Bengals signing of Robert Geathers to a six-year contract extension Thursday, possibly signals the departure of fellow defensive end Justin Smith. Smith's age and salary - he is one of the top free agents on the market and is expected to fetch a big contract - could work against him in Cincinnati. Another head-coaching opportunity might be closing for Ron Rivera. The Cardinals are conducting a second round of interviews, and the East Valley Tribune is reporting that Rivera -- who can't speak with the Cardinals again until the Bears' season has ended -- is out of the running. A source said Vikings defensive coordinator Mike Tomlin impressed Dolphins owner H. Wayne Huizenga and top executives Bryan Wiedmeier and Joe Bailey during an interview in Minneapolis on Monday. Chiefs coach Herm Edwards is defensive about his offense and says he's responsible for team's performance. What was dubbed as an end-of-season news conference at Arrowhead Stadium turned into a lengthy rant about offense and some heavy uncertainty over the man who will be running it come September. The Cardinals continue to work through their short list of coaching candidates. They'll interview Steelers assistant Ken Whisenhunt for a second time today. Left tackle Jonathan Ogden practiced again Thursday, but Ravens coach Brian Billick hinted that the decision to play Ogden, who has a hyperextended left big toe, could be made at game time on Saturday. The NFL is expected to announce in a few weeks that the Giants' regular-season game against the Dolphins in 2007 will be played at London's Wembley Stadium. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
