It needs to try to keep its marquee drivers from leaving for other manufacturers, he said. Though Michael Waltrip Racing and Bill Davis Racing have been in the middle of the speed charts and Red Bull has appeared slow, it's difficult to judge where Toyotas rate in preseason testing. Many teams experiment with different setups and packages, even using devices for information-gathering sake that would not be legal in competition. And some hold back so advances aren't mimicked in the copycat atmosphere of the open garage. Penske Racing South drivers Ryan Newman and Kurt Busch worked on a variety of gear and restrictor-plate combinations as they tested an Avenger "car of tomorrow" Wednesday during Nextel Cup practice at Daytona. After being involved in the manufacturer's truck series launch and logging more test time than any Toyota driver so far, David Reutimann said the Cup program is at least as advanced as the truck program was before its inaugural season in 2004. Reutimann said his cars have struggled with dragging the racetrack and rubbing wheels, but he isn't worried about engine problems. Denny Hamlin and Elliott Sadler both sport new looks for the upcoming NASCAR Nextel Cup season but it has nothing to do with paint schemes. Hamlin hired a physical trainer in the offseason, and Sadler has lost weight and returned to the size he was in his rookie season. Robert Yates Racing's David Gilliland says that having veteran Ricky Rudd with him during testing is quite an asset. Gilliland, who has never raced a Nextel Cup car at Daytona, let Rudd take a few laps in his No. 38 Ford and compared notes. To be more specific, Rudd is helping Gilliland know where he should be on the track. Mark Martin said he plans to be with his new team, Ginn Racing, for several years, whether it's as a driver or in another position. "This is not a short-term endeavor for me," Martin said. Jon Wood will make his Nextel Cup debut for Team Ford Racing at Las Vegas in March. He'll get 10 starts in the No. 21 Ford Fusion of Wood Brothers Racing and drive the team's No. 47 Ford in another. He'll drive for team veteran Ken Schrader in 10 races and be Schrader's teammate in the other, at Las Vegas. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
