Tigers manager Jim Leyland said the team might have "made a mistake" when it acquired infielder Neifi Perez from the Cubs in August, telling WDFN-AM (1130) on Thursday that Perez "played terrible" in Detroit. According to two sources, the Pirates' next target could be free agent Trot Nixon. GM Dave Littlefield also remains in touch with the representatives for at least two free-agent starters, Brian Lawrence and Tomo Ohka. If the season started today, Jacques Jones would move from right field to center. However, if the Cubs feel Jones is unhappy enough with his lot in Chicago to be a disruptive force on the team, they'll move him. Entering the final year of his contract with the Rockies, it's Clint Hurdle's responsibility to match victories to ownership's expectations of achieving the franchise's first winning season since 2000. Anything less, and he's probably gone. Miguel Tejada 's happiness was one of the Orioles' biggest concerns heading into spring training last year, but judging by comments the star shortstop made yesterday, it is no longer an issue. The Mariners have been characterized recently as the front-runner for free agent Brian Lawrence. But Lawrence's agent, Page Odle, said Thursday the Rockies and Pirates improved their offers. The Padres are also in the running. The Rockies are trying to add free-agent reliever Dan Kolb to complement primary setup man LaTroy Hawkins. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
