Kevin Harvick said that NASCAR needs to prune the Busch schedule, and it is odd that NASCAR is sending its Busch tour to Mexico City and Montreal rather than its much richer and better-backed Cup series. Harvick also said that NASCAR needs to hit hard at the cost of Busch engines, perhaps demanding teams run them more than just one race each.

It might seem that NASCAR's decision to limit past points champions to six provisional starts per season might upset former champion Bill Elliott, but he says that's not the case. "They did me a favor," Elliott said, explaining that because the one past champion's provisional goes to the most recent champion, as the 1988 champ, he is 10th in line.

The question is: What were Indy-car teams doing for two days this week on Daytona International Speedway's road course? Testing their equipment? Testing the track? Both?

Neither track nor series officials would say if Indy cars will return to the Florida track in 2008 for a race -- it's likely they don't know yet.

Former IndyCar Series champion Dan Wheldon has been fitted in Charlotte for a NASCAR stock car seat and will test a Busch Series car at some point, but when and where has yet to be determined. A Chip Ganassi Racing spokesperson said Wheldon's primary focus this season is winning a championship and Indy, but at some point Ganassi would have the Englishmen test a Busch Car.

Bristol Motor Speedway will open the Car of Tomorrow test to the public. The two-day test, scheduled Feb. 28-March 1, is expected to draw nearly every Cup team since the radically new car will make its competitive debut at Bristol during the Food City 500 weekend on March 23-25.

ABC will pull Rusty Wallace off his NASCAR broadcasting gig to put him back in the booth at Indy this May, he told the Journal Sentinel. The 1989 Winston Cup champion also will return to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in July for the debut of the ABC / ESPN portion of the Nextel Cup schedule.

Sam Hornish, Jr., who last drove at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in 2000 and finished third in the Vegas Indy 300 Indy Racing League event, will return to the track next week to test the No. 12 Busch Series Dodge for Penske Racing. Teammate Kurt Busch will drive the car Monday, with Hornish scheduled to drive Tuesday in the second preseason test for the Busch Series.

Washington Lt. Gov. Brad Owen announced Thursday he supports the funding package for International Speedway Corp. to build a race track in Washington. ISC currently is looking at an area of land in Kitsap County, about 20 miles south of Seattle. The legislation, which likely will be submitted in the next week, is not specific for that site.

Lowe's Motor Speedway president H.A. "Humpy" Wheeler has begun a campaign to market his track as "The Beast of the Southeast." Wheeler, who said he always has liked "The Lady in Black" tag that was hung on Darlington Raceway years ago, said the Beast theme is intended to capitalize on his track's reputation for being tough to navigate without wrecking.
