Don't discount New Mexico State men's basketball coach Reggie Theus as a Minnesota Gophers coaching candidate if Flip Saunders decides against returning to his alma mater. New Mexico State, where former Gophers athletics director McKinley Boston is AD, is 18-5. Theus makes $500,000 a year.

In wake of comments made by the nation's top high school running back prospect Joe McKnight, USC compliance officials are investigating whether an NCAA recruiting violation occurred. He told reporters back home that his mind was put at ease about USC after he listened to a telephone conversation between Coach Pete Carroll and Reggie Bush, a possible violation of NCAA recruiting rules.

Florida coach Urban Meyer was scheduled to speak at Lakeland High's football banquet Thursday night at First Presbyterian Church. However, Meyer found out after he landed at Lakeland Linder Regional Airport that it's against NCAA rules for a coach to speak at a high school banquet within 48 hours of the NCAA's national signing day.

New Jersey high school running back Adonis Thomas learned what has to be the toughest lesson about making an early oral commitment. Thomas agreed months ago to play for Kansas State. So why did he sign Wednesday with Toledo instead? What made it tough for Thomas, according to his high school coach, Altarik White, was when K-State informed Thomas he was no longer part of its plans ? telling him so late in the process. Less than 24 hours after coach Bret Bielema introduced Wisconsin's 2007 freshman class, he received word that kicker Phil Welch of Fort Collins, Colo., had accepted a scholarship offer. Welch, the No. 15 kicker in the nation according to Scout.com, is set to grayshirt, meaning he will pay for his schooling next fall and officially join the program in January 2008.

Northern Illinois offensive coordinator John Bond, who coached the nation's leading rusher last season, is a candidate for the offensive coordinator job at Georgia Tech. Georgia Tech coach Chan Gailey confirmed Thursday he had talked with Bond but declined further comment.

Auburn linebacker Tray Blackmon is not enrolled in school this semester and will miss spring practice, coach Tommy Tuberville said. Tuberville said he expects Blackmon, who was twice suspended last season, to rejoin the team in June. The former Parade All-American is "taking care of personal problems," the coach said.
