Bill Murray, who stood on the 17th green at Spyglass Hill on Thursday afternoon and watched a rogue monster pine tree crash a few feet from where he and partner Scott Hoch stood, later said dramatically, "We cheated death and we had no bogeys."

Phil Mickelson piled up nine consecutive pars until he reached his closing hole, the 555-yard ninth at Poppy Hills. Mickelson drove in the fairway and from 230 yards, knocked a four-iron to 18 feet, then rolled in the downhill putt for the eagle. It wasn't the longest putt Mickelson made ? he also had a 35-foot birdie putt at the 13th. That a good sign for Mickelson, who has been looking for them. Tough to say which was more remarkable -- Aaron Baddeley's pair of weekend 64s or the pair of shoes he wore while winning the FBR Open. Price tag on his Ecco spikes: $400.

The countdown to the 2010 U.S. Senior Open at Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish (Wash.) began Thursday with a news conference at the club. Sahalee president David Torrell noted that 90 percent of the club's members had voted in favor of the event. Sahalee originally was promised the 2010 PGA Championship by the PGA of America, but the PGA snatched it away, citing concerns about competition for corporate dollars with the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
