Opening arguments are scheduled in Suffolk Superior Court today in Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis' medical malpractice lawsuit against two Mass. General doctors involved in his near-fatal gastric bypass surgery. New England Patriots QB Tom Brady, who played for Weis when Charlie was the team's offensive coordinator, is listed to appear as a witness for his former coach.

Two names being connected to the upcoming coaching vacancy at Colorado are from the Mountain West Conference. Air Force coach Jeff Bzdelik has been mentioned all season as possibly being in line for the CU job. Now Wyoming coach Steve McClain is said to be interested, but in both cases, the connections are based on speculation and nothing official.

Three Oklahoma football players, one more than the university has previously acknowledged, may have accepted money for work they did not perform at a local car dealership, according to an NCAA document disclosed Monday.

Nebraska running back Marlon Lucky was hospitalized Sunday night according to the Lincoln Police Department. Sources close to the situation tell HuskersIllustrated.com Lucky was found by his roommate in their Lincoln apartment complex unconscious and an ambulance rushed him to the hospital where he remains in intensive care.

Henry Sibley High School quarterback Phil Haig has shifted his college plans to Illinois after Clint Brewster, son of new University of Minnesota football coach Tim Brewster, signed a national letter of intent with the Gophers last week.

The news on Georgia guard Mike Mercer was actually better than expected. He tore the anterior cruciate ligament but suffered only a Grade 2 sprain of the medial collateral ligament. Mercer will undergo surgery within the next two weeks and will be able to return to action before the start of next season.

One issue spurring leaders in Division III of the NCAA to lobby for a realignment is the belief that the membership could expand to almost 600 from 420 in as little as 10 years. A frequently voiced worry is that the NAIA, a smaller sports organization that lost more than 125 members to the NCAA in the 1980s and '90s, will dissolve.

Miami is expected to announce as early as today the hiring of Michael Barrow as its linebackers coach. Tim Walton, the current defensive backs coach, might be named the defensive coordinator. That would still leave one coaching vacancy that head coach Randy Shannon said last week he planned on filling.

Texas Tech head coach designate Pat Knight said Benny Valentine is the only basketball player with a criminal record his father has recruited. Valentine has made a minimal contribution on the court for Tech, but his parents said he is flourishing under the direction of Bob Knight.
