Red Sox principal owner John Henry will reveal today that he's investing $50 million in the top team on the NASCAR racing circuit, Roush Racing. But has Henry, a legendary commodities trader, made the classic investment mistake of buying at the peak of the market? Last year, the sport had its first decline in television viewership since at least 1997 , and some analysts wonder how much more the sport can grow.

NASCAR was still examining evidence before deciding what to do with a fifth racecar, a Toyota Camry driven by Michael Waltrip, that also failed inspection. Another harsh penalty could be on the way. Before the penalties were announced, Brian France, NASCAR's chairman and chief executive, vowed yesterday to punish the teams that were cheating.

Although Roush Racing has appointed an interim crew chief to work with Matt Kenseth, the team president Geoff Smith said Roush might appeal the penalty. If so, Robbie Reiser could work the Daytona 500 while awaiting a hearing. He has not missed a race since the team began with the 1999 Daytona 500, 255 races ago.

NASCAR still has hopes to one day race in or near New York City and plans to try to take a methodical approach to foreign markets, NASCAR Chairman and CEO Brian France said Tuesday. France said the next expansion could come in Europe, Latin America or Asia.

Matt Martin may not want to race in NASCAR after all. The 15-year-old son of NASCAR star Mark Martin has been racing since he turned 7. He has demonstrated some ability and has the right connections, so everyone has assumed he will try to follow in his dad's footsteps. And he may. Or he may not.

International Speedway announced Tuesday it is exploring a partnership to develop a motorsports facility in Adams County, Colo., near the Denver International Airport.

ISC is looking a land parcels in the cities of Aurora and Commerce City and will work with public entities to explore the feasibility of a track that would seat about 75,000.

Kerry Earnhardt, who has struggled to get his racing career on track, has joined Dale Earnhardt Inc., the company founded by his father, as an administrator. He said he still hopes to run some races. Kerry's son Jeffrey, 18, has signed with DEI as a developmental driver. Taylor Earnhardt, 18, daughter of Teresa and Dale Earnhardt, is an accomplished horse rider who competes on the equestrian barrel racing circuit.
