Chargers officials are discussing Pete Carroll, but they are clearly not banking on him. The Chargers are looking for a coach to deliver a Super Bowl. USC has a coach with two national championships. Should they team up and unite Southern California, San Diego County will have only more impetus to help build a new stadium. The team's future in San Diego could be at stake. The Chargers have received permission to talk to Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan about their head coaching vacancy, according to league sources. In addition to Ryan, the Chargers have been granted permission to talk to three other candidates: Bears defensive coordinator Ron Rivera, 49ers offensive coordinator Norv Turner and 49ers linebackers coach Mike Singletary. The Dolphins told impending restricted free agent Cleo Lemon they expect he will compete for playing time and discussed a new contract this week, agent J.R. Rickert said Tuesday. Dolphins coach Cam Cameron is sorry his old boss, Marty Schottenheimer, was fired by the Chargers. But don't look for Schottenheimer to be working for the Dolphins anytime soon. There really is no logical spot for Schottenheimer. Rumors persist that the Vikings could trade with the Houston Texans for quarterback David Carr, who might cost just a fourth-round draft pick. Although the Texans have never admitted it, if they trade David Carr, they'll have to acquire another veteran to compete with Sage Rosenfels for the starting job. They also are expected to draft a quarterback who fits Gary Kubiak's system and give him time to develop. It shouldn't be long before Vikings release cornerback Fred Smoot. Giants fans may have been able to see Tiki Barber in Big Blue's huddle for another season, if not for the physical beating he received playing under head coach Tom Coughlin. Barber implied that Coughlin has problems relating to players on the team, and that it was an "act of God" that the physical demands the coach placed on him did not result in a serious injury. Lions president Matt Millen and coach Rod Marinelli have given cornerback Dre' Bly permission to seek a trade. Redskins quarterback Mark Brunell said yesterday his agents are negotiating a reworked contract with the team and that he anticipates a resolution to the talks in a few weeks. Brunell said he has not given up hope of starting for another team but would only want to be a backup in Washington. The Cardinals are close to hiring Ron Aiken, an assistant coach at the University of Iowa, to coach the defensive line, according to sources. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
