Paul Holmgren of the Flyers returned yesterday from the general managers' meetings confident that the NHL would change its rules on suspensions for instigator penalties. Many clubs feel that their skilled players are being targeted and that their enforcers cannot protect them without facing suspensions. The NHL's 30 general managers have given a thumbs down to the idea of awarding teams three points for a win. The league's GMs liked the idea enough at the February 2004 meetings to include three-point wins on a list of recommendations for the board of governors. Whatever support that existed for it three years ago is now gone. The need for another left wing who can put the puck in the net is becoming more urgent for the Ducks, who remain trapped in a scoring funk. A source close to the situation said the Ducks are among "eight to 10 teams" interested in either Keith Tkachuk or Bill Guerin. St. Louis is reportedly asking for a young prospect and a first-round pick for either. Former Red Wings forward Martin Lapointe was in town Wednesday -- as a Blackhawk. There's speculation he could be returning to Detroit for a longer stay. Teams such as Atlanta, Montreal and Vancouver are believed to be interested in Blackhawks center Bryan Smolinski, who almost certainly will be with another club come Tuesday. Jaromir Jagr, who was targeted and stifled by the Devils yet again, walked away from a group of reporters after a few questions after practice. Jagr appeared to be concerned about close games lost because of Rangers defensive breakdowns and not the hooking and holding that have impeded his play without penalties being assessed. Penguins coach Michel Therrien didn't just defend his criticism of goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury. He stood by his words, announcing yesterday that Fleury will sit tonight while backup Jocelyn Thibault starts at Florida. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
