Rangers GM Glen Sather is said to have told potential trading partners that he'd consider trading Jaromir Jagr if presented an offer that "knocked him out." A short-notice deal for Jagr would be difficult to engineer. It seems unlikely anyone would be willing to take on the 35-year-old now 15 years from his last Stanley Cup.

The Rangers weren't planning on making any blockbuster moves to beat today's 3 p.m. NHL trade deadline. But they might have to make a minor move to promote locker room harmony as the public airing of a month-old bench shouting match has Jaromir Jagr ticked. That there is tension between defenseman Aaron Ward and Jagr is clear.

The invitation to bid on Jaromir Jagr is believed to have been extended to at least one Western Conference team. One piece of speculation suggested he might be an even exchange for Florida's Todd Bertuzzi, who has yet to play this season.

For weeks, Florida winger Gary Roberts told anyone who asked that there were only two teams that could tempt him to waive his no-trade clause. And the Penguins weren't one of them. But that didn't dissuade Penguins GM Ray Shero from working out the terms of a trade, and Roberts didn't automatically reject the idea of agreeing to join the Penguins.

Sources continue to insist that the Islanders are listening to offers for heart-and-soul forward Jason Blake, with Nashville speculated as a potential destination.

Florida GM Jacques Martin has been getting calls regarding left winger Martin Gelinas, and center Chris Gratton's name popped up although he said Monday evening he had not heard anything regarding a trade. Gratton has another year left with the Panthers and would have to agree to any trade.

Here is the type of player Lightning general manager Jay Feaster hopes to land before today's 3 p.m. trade deadline: A good skater with a nose for the puck. Tough, feisty, a disturber, someone not afraid to use his body on the forecheck and grind in the corners. If he chips in offensively on the third or fourth line, so much the better.

The Flyers might not be finished dealing before today's trading deadline. As an unrestricted free agent this summer, goalie Robert Esche could be an attractive pickup for a team looking to make a postseason run.

Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said that the team had made a contract offer to Kyle Calder, but that it was rejected by his agent, Brad Devine. The Flyers decided that it was best to get value for Calder, and Holmgren said he was impressed by Lasse Kukkonen's skills.

Given their tenuous salary cap situation and their position near the top of the Eastern Conference standings, no one expects the Devils to be able -- or willing -- to make any major moves before today's 3 p.m. deadline, although it is safe to say general manager Lou Lamoriello will try to do something to make the Devils a better team.

The Blackhawks are hoping to sign Jonathan Toews, their first-round draft pick, and re-sign center Michal Handzus and didn't see room in the budget to bring back Bryan Smolinski, who is making $1.52 million.

There was a brief window a few weeks ago when Niklas Backstrom may have been trade bait. Not anymore. We know for sure is that Minnesota's backup goaltender isn't going anywhere. What counts is that Backstrom is much too valuable to let go while the Wild still are playing.
