Surgery "more than likely" will be required. It started as an inside joke -- good-natured racial banter in the privacy of the locker room between a black assistant coach and a group of white players on the USC football team. They were members of an aggressive special teams unit. He called them the "White Nation." However, when it ended up on an Internet site, it struck outsiders as shockingly racist. On Thursday, USC officials and students scrambled to apologize, explain and contain a potential public relations embarrassment. The news media in Arkansas, citing anonymous sources, have been reporting the past two weeks that Stan Heath will be fired if the Razorbacks do not make the NCAA tournament. The Arkansas players have rallied around Heath, even as he has exhorted them in meetings to play for themselves, not his job security. Bob Knight, for whatever reason Thursday, wanted to talk. A lot. Knight all but demanded his press conference following a 10-point victory over Colorado. The only two coaches who could come in to Minnesota and excite the fans so they would buy tickets in advance would be Bobby Knight of Texas Tech and Flip Saunders of the Pistons. On a few unofficial college visits, Wilmington (N.C.) New Hanover coach Linc Lyles asked college coaches to measure junior Ty Walker. All insisted he was a legitimate 7 feet. National recruiting analyst Bob Gibbons says Walker is being heavily recruited by North Carolina, Wake Forest, N.C. State, Virginia, Clemson, South Carolina and Charlotte. Former University of Minnesota director of football operations Tim Allen has been contacted by two Southern BCS schools about the same position. Villanova guard Mike Nardi said his sprained ankle and strained calf were improving and should be healed in time if the team makes the NCAA tournament. Nardi played only eight minutes in Villanova's loss to Georgetown yesterday. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
