Executives from golf club companies have been lying low since the USGA announced last week it is considering a ban on clubs manufactured with the current U-groove face designs. Ping Golf Chairman and CEO John Solheim was the lone exception, expressing his unhappiness. "It's straight back to where we were before," Solheim said. Ping waged largely successful battles with the USGA and the PGA Tour in the early 1990s over attempts to ban or change U-grooves, then commonly known as "square" grooves. This is the tour's 11th event of the season. Do you know how many times we've seen Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods in the same field? Twice. How about Ernie Els with either Phil or Tiger? Twice. Ditto for Jim Furyk. Only two of the 11 events have even drawn more than half of the world's top-10 ranked golfers. The problem is the PGA Tour has more events than leverage when it comes to getting the biggest names to show any support for their own organization. Playing with a broken finger suffered six weeks ago during the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic on his right hand - a middle digit so grotesquely swollen a single wave could flip off a hemisphere -- Jesper Parnevik toured Innisbrook's Copperhead Course with five birdies and two bogeys. Buyer beware: Buick dealers in the Bay Area are running a television ad to sell cars driven by PGA Tour players from last month's A&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. The only player pictured in the commercial is Tiger Woods, who hasn't played the tournament in five years. Annika Sorenstam is likely past her prime now but not far past it. She is 36 now and has talked about starting a family. She's heavily involved in building a teaching academy in Florida and her interests reach far beyond the golf course now. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
