A source indicated that White Sox general manager Ken Williams has been in talks with Philadelphia GM -- and good friend -- Pat Gillick about a deal that would send middle-relief help, including lefthander Boone Logan, to the Phillies for former Sox outfielder Aaron Rowand.

The Angels are bracing for confrontation with Gary Matthews Jr. and the players' union sooner rather than later, preparing for disciplinary action against the center fielder unless he publicly addresses allegations he received a shipment of human growth hormone. Angels owner Arte Moreno has said he wanted the matter resolved by opening day.

St. Louis pitching coach Dave Duncan on Thursday would not discount the potential need to trade for relief help. The Cardinals opened camp with an apparent surplus of relievers, which might have allowed them to subtract rather than add a bullpen arm.

Duaner Sanchez' poor work ethic and attitude this spring have irritated Mets players and officials, and Willie Randolph reacted yesterday by issuing a strong message that it will no longer be tolerated.

Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said he has not heard from the Athletics, who are losing centerfielder Mark Kotsay for at least three months with a back injury. In fact, Melvin said no club has called to inquire about his glut of outfielders.

Johan Santana believes it is time for the Twins step up. He believes the Twins shouldn't wait to try to retain him and the other core players. Several baseball insiders believe it is a foregone conclusion he won't remain with the small-market Twins after 2008, based solely on San Francisco's signing of Barry Zito to a seven-year, $126 million contract.

Dodgers manager Grady Little said he wants his starting pitchers to begin working on their hitting as opening day draws near. So perhaps there was some significance to the fact right-hander Brett Tomko had a new two-tone bat stuffed in his locker. Relievers, after all, have no need for a bat.

Don't look now, but lefthander Neal Cotts is the front-runner for the Cubs' fifth starter job. And if that means three lefty starters in the Cubs' rotation this season, well, Cubs manager Lou Piniella has been there, done that -- with success.
-- Chicago Sun-Times

With Mike Hampton out at least two months, Lance Cormier and Kyle Davies won't be vying for the fifth spot in the rotation but claiming the fourth and fifth spots behind Chuck James. The Braves had been getting six starters ready, in case Hampton's elbow slowed him down.

Dodgers righthander Brad Penny and Phillies right-hander Jon Lieber are available, but each will earn $7.5 million this season, a salary that most likely would be too high for the budget-conscious Braves to absorb.

Josh Hamilton, a recovering cocaine addict who is trying to revive his baseball career with the Reds, has gone 10 for 21 this spring, making a strong argument to make the roster as an outfielder.
-- New York Times

Mike Mussina's missing arm strength will surface at some point, although don't expect mid-90 readings. His ability to paint the corners will return. And he is a good bet to win 12-15 games this season if he avoids injury.
