Chris Simon's vicious swing at Ryan Hollweg's head briefly left the Rangers' winger unable to hear but somehow resulted in just a cut to the chin that required a few stitches. The beleaguered NHL players union has scheduled an emergency conference call for Sunday night to confirm to some of the league's senior players that executive director Ted Saskin and union official Ken Kim have been inappropriately accessing player email accounts. David Koci was called up from Norfolk, and the Blackhawks aren't promoting him because he can score goals. Koci, a 6-6, 238-pounder, has only three goals in 194 games over four seasons in the AHL. Instead, the Hawks like his penalty minutes -- 770 over that same span, with an AHL-high 212 this season in only 39 games. The Penguins aren't packing for Kansas City just yet. After more than four hours of talks last night, the team and state and local leaders reported "significant progress" in negotiations on a new arena, providing hope for fans just when it seemed as if the franchise might skate off to another city. Bryan Berard's season is finished. His days with the Blue Jackets likely are, too, and, quite possibly, his NHL career. Berard, 30, has been told by doctors to sit out the final 16 games of the season because his lower back -- twice repaired through surgery -- is hurting again. Brian Rolston says he wants to remain a Wild player for the rest of his career, but, of course, the veteran winger always expected to remain a Boston Bruin forever, too. The Flyers are expected to begin contract negotiations with goaltender Martin Biron's agent, Gilles Lupien, in the next few days. Outside of the short while he was actually healthy in the Red Wings lineup, the last time Derian Hatcher had any significant time on the power play was under Ken Hitchcock in Dallas. Flyers assistant Craig Berube, who runs the power play, met with coach John Stevens and decided last week to put Hatcher in front of the net to screen out the goalies. The Devils expected to be without Brian Gionta last night against Pittsburgh but did not exercise an emergency recall because of their cap situation, and when Colin White reinjured his hand in warmups, their lack of spares struck them doubly. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
