Insiders say Lon Kruger of Nevada-Las Vegas is getting pushed for the Minnesota basketball coaching job by a powerful influence. If Kruger comes to Minnesota, look for him to retain pal Jim Molinari. LSU assistant women's basketball coach Carla Berry was the person who first contacted university officials about allegedly improper conduct on the part of head coach Pokey Chatman, sources inside and outside the athletic department have confirmed. Berry's complaint came in mid-February, and since that time Chatman's role with the team has been closely supervised, according to a university source who stressed LSU reacted promptly and properly. Gonzaga forward Josh Heytvelt, charged with felony drug possession, has left a substantial void on a team unaccustomed to scandal. He was kept apart from the team for more than a month, then coaches decided last week that it was time to bring everybody together. So Heytvelt walked into McCarthey Athletic Center for practice Saturday. UCLA's football team picked up commitments from seven Southern California high school juniors on a single day over the weekend, raising the Bruins' early commit list to 10. UCLA's strategy in recent years has been to try to get off to fast starts in the recruiting competition, making early offers to players while hoping to gain their loyalty before other schools can intervene. Arizona State senior receiver Rudy Burgess will miss part of spring practice because of arthroscopic surgery on his left ankle. Dennis Erickson said the surgery was "nothing serious." Despite returning 19 starters from last fall's 4-8 team, Vanderbilt football coach Bobby Johnson insists that every starting position will be scrutinized as the Commodores open spring practice today. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
