The new car has made a lot of laps on race tracks across the country, but no one has yet to make a pit stop under race conditions. And that has some crew chiefs worried. Tony Stewart is not a big fan of the car of tomorrow, but that doesn't mean he's already psyched himself out of winning this weekend's Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway. NASCAR's new Nextel Cup car will debut at Bristol, but the two-time series champ isn't making a big deal out of it. Jimmie Johnson stepped out of a stock car this week to test at Cadillac CTS-V in preparation for the Sports Car Club of America's Speed World Challenge GT race set for May 24 at Lowe's Motor Speedway. Johnson said it took him several tries to successfully make a chicane on the backstretch, one of the modifications to the 1.5-mile oval that will be made for the race. Dale Earnhardt Jr. will introduce a new Sharpie on Thursday at Bristol Motor Speedway as part of his partnership with the company. The "No. 8 Sharpie" will feature the autograph of NASCAR's most popular driver. Also, a billboard with Earnhardt Jr. and the new marker will be unveiled at Bristol Motor Speedway. The Dodge Avenger, which joins the Dodge Charger in Nextel Cup competition this season, makes its racing debut Sunday in the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway -- the first NASCAR Car of Tomorrow (COT) race. A.J. Allmendinger struggled in stock cars from the outset. At a two-day test session in Las Vegas in January, he crashed both of his No. 84 Toyota Camrys. Qualifying was no easier. The problem is that Toyota, the Red Bull team and Allmendinger are having to adapt to Cup racing at the same time, he said. Allmendinger spent two days, and 370 laps, testing the car at Bristol. Paul Menard tested the Car of Tomorrow at South Boston Speedway yesterday. While the focus of the test was to prepare for next weekend's event at Martinsville, a secondary goal was to improve DEI's overall COT program. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
