Dale Earnhardt Jr. believes drivers can still bump and pass with the Car of Tomorrow. His theory will certainly get tested on Sunday in the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway. Former Steelers coach Bill Cowher will star in an ABC-TV reality show about NASCAR that is set to air in June. Cowher will compete against John Elway, Tony Hawk, William Shatner, Laird Hamilton and his wife, Gabby Reese, Serena Williams, Jewel and others. Participants will compete in speed, driving from zero to 100 mph, braking and pit crew skills. NASCAR quickly learned one piece of valuable information from this week's debut of the "Car of Tomorrow." After a day-long process of inspection Thursday, one that ended about 9 p.m., NASCAR has decided to bring teams in a day early at Martinsville, Va., to allow extra time for inspections. Teams will enter Thursday morning for inspection only. Looks like Jeff Burton needs a new place to live. Burton said he would "bet my house" that Mark Martin would be here this weekend, but true to his word, Martin was not on hand Friday when practice started for Sunday's Food City 500. George Gillett, owner of the NHL's Montreal Canadiens and co-owner the Liverpool Soccer Club, will attend his second Nextel Cup race this weekend as guest of team owner Ray Evernham. Evernham has been talking with Gillett about being a partner in his organization, which fields the Dodges of Kasey Kahne, Elliott Sadler and Scott Riggs. Michael Waltrip is no longer a co-host of the Speed Channel show Tradin' Paint, network officials confirmed Friday. Waltrip will remain on Inside Nextel Cup and will continue to work for Speed Channel's NASCAR Truck Series broadcasts. Speed spokesman Erik Arneson said the network would not elaborate on personnel matters. Jeff Burton says his Richard Childress Racing team can't wait long for a resolution to its AT&T lawsuit against NASCAR. That's why he's keenly awaiting to see if AT&T will get the injunction it's asking for to be allowed to put the AT&T logos on the car in place of Cingular. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
