A veteran baseball official predicts the big trading deadline deal will be Florida ace Dontrelle Willis going to the Dodgers for prospects including outfielder Matt Kemp. If you're a Red Sox follower, root for the Astros to lose big in the first two months of the season. Such a scenario might effectively take Houston out of the Roger Clemens running and force him to choose between the Sox and Yanks, who now are far more alike than many Sox officials would like to believe. The cost of renting Clemens: Roughly $3.5 million to $4 million per month. Andruw Jones and John Smoltz will both be free agents after the season. It is widely suspected that Jones, who is represented by super agent Scott Boras, will leave via free agency and score a huge paycheck. The Aaron Rowand-White Sox trade rumble has quieted because the Sox are happy with the way Scott Podsednik has come back from surgery for a sports hernia. There is still every chance Phillies GM Pat Gillick will pull off a deal before Opening Day to improve the pitching and change the team's outlook. The Phillies really need to improve, and their skipper knows it. Charlie Manuel is starting to sound an awful lot like a manager in the last year of his contract who is beginning to worry that his team might not be good enough. Phillies pitcher Jon Lieber has a mild strain of his right oblique muscle. The injury came in the aftermath of his first relief appearance since Manuel announced the veteran would open the season in the bullpen if he wasn't traded. An injury isn't going to make trading Lieber easier. Chan Ho Park has been removed from the list of candidates for the Mets' rotation and has been assigned to a potential relief role. Park said he wasn't sure if he would be willing to pitch in relief for an entire season or whether he would request to be cut. The Rockies are the latest team to inquire about Nationals closer Chad Cordero. 1 of 2 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
