Reports on Foxsports.com and KARK-TV in Little Rock, citing unnamed sources, said that Arkansas probably would hire Texas A&M basketball coach Billy Gillispie. The Foxsports.com story said a news conference to introduce Gillispie could occur today. But two sources in the A&M basketball program said Monday there was no indication Gillispie was leaving. All the overheated rumor and breathless speculation fizzled out with one phone conversation. John Calipari called Reggie Rose, and the Memphis coach told the brother of the Tigers' prized recruit, Simeon guard Derrick Rose, that he had agreed in principle to a contract extension with the school. No Kentucky job. No recruitment to start again. Arkansas coach Stan Heath, who was fired Monday despite consecutive NCAA appearances with the Razorbacks, said he is interested in the University of South Florida job. Starting point guard Denis Clemente and freshman forward Lawrence Gilbert will not return to the Miami basketball team next season. Both were granted release from their scholarships Monday, according to a release sent out by the university. Michigan officials have requested permission from Vanderbilt to speak with Commodores women's basketball Coach Melanie Balcomb about the Wolverines' coaching vacancy. Ryan McFoy, who played at safety as a true freshman last year, began working at linebacker on Monday, the start of Arizona State's second week of spring practice. The emergence of Troy Nolan at safety made moving McFoy, at least for the remainder of spring practice, move viable. Northwestern quarterback C.J. Bacher could use a break on the injury front. Not literally, though. After missing the first half of last season with a stress fracture in his leg, he'll sit out the beginning of spring workouts as he recovers from toe surgery. Georgia football coach Mark Richt said Monday he will handle discipline of offensive lineman Tanner Strickland "in-house," meaning the freshman will not face suspension for his arrest on misdemeanor charges of possessing a fake ID. His arrest was the third of a UGA player since the end of last season. The home football opener for Temple, against Navy, that was originally scheduled for Aug. 30 has been moved to the next evening to make room for an Eagles exhibition game. Temple will open against Navy at 7 p.m. Aug. 31 at Lincoln Financial Field. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
