A Texas A&M basketball recruit said an assistant coach called him Monday to assure him that head coach Billy Gillispie wasn't in contact with other schools. Gillispie was in his office in College Station again Tuesday, according to A&M officials. He is still expected to travel to Atlanta today for the Final Four with the Aggies' contingent.

Notre Dame has landed an oral commitment from tight end Kyle Rudolph of Cincinnati. The 6-7, 225-pound Rudolph told the South Bend Tribune that the fact Irish tight ends Anthony Fasano and John Carlson were finalists the last two years for the Mackey Award -- which goes to the nation's top tight end -- played a role in his decision.

Duke women's basketball coach Gail Goestenkors could be named the new head coach at Texas as early as today. Goestenkors is scheduled to arrive in Austin today, according to two sources close to the Texas program.

Not one of the 32 head coaches guiding Harvard's intercollegiate sports programs is African-American. Nor is the athletic director or his 13 senior administrators. A top Harvard official said the university's president-elect, Drew G. Faust, is committed to correcting the problem. The school recently launched a search for a new men's basketball coach.

Athletic director Pat Lyons said Iona would begin a national search to replace Jeff Ruland. there are names floating abound, including former Virginia and Providence coach Pete Gillen, former St. John's and Manhattan coach Fran Fraschilla, Albany coach Will Brown and Providence assistant Steve DeMeo.

After talking by phone on Tuesday with Iowa Athletics Director Gary Barta about the Hawkeyes' head-coaching vacancy, Bruce Pearl told him thanks but no thanks, and he made it clear that he has no interest in leaving Tennessee for any job.

The son of N.C. State men's basketball coach Sidney Lowe was charged Tuesday night in connection with an attempted robbery and shooting Saturday on the campus of UNC Greensboro. Sidney R. Lowe Jr., 21 faces nine charges for that incident and also 13 charges in connection with a robbery March 16.

USC quarterback John David Booty feels right at home as the Trojans run some plays out of the shotgun formation for the first time since he arrived on campus in 2003. USC will not move away from having its quarterback take the snap from under center. But coach Pete Carroll and offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian determined that the time was right to experiment.

Maryland coach Ralph Friedgen officially deemed the Terrapins top quarterback spot "open." Jordan Steffy's stiffest competition will come from Josh Portis, an athletic 6-foot-3 quarterback who sat out last season after transferring from Florida.

Tennessee's quarterbacks might not have deserved all of the blame for the Vols' poorest offensive performance of the spring. Jonathan Crompton and redshirt freshman Nick Stephens were forced to run the steps inside Neyland Stadium after throwing a combined four interceptions in Saturday's scrimmage. Later, coach Phillip Fulmer went so far as to say Jonathan Crompton has earned the coaching staff's "complete confidence."

Pitt sophomore Kevin Collier may find it hard to crack into the lineup. The Panthers have two other tailbacks returning, including starter LaRod Stephens-Howling, and have four running backs in the incoming recruiting class. Blue-chipper LeSean McCoy's signing was a major coup for the Pitt coaching staff and he should be in the mix for a starting position early.
