NASCAR officials are scrambling to solve a couple of potentially serious issues with the "Car of Tomorrow." Denny Hamlin and several other drivers complained about an unusual amount of carbon monoxide in their system after Sunday's race. Some teams had issues with the protective foam in the right side door overheating, melting and producing toxic fumes. Some had springs that failed for no apparent reason, which may have been the reason for the No. 16 car of Greg Biffle being too low during post-race inspection.

Denny Hamlin wondered whether his "extremely bad headaches" had anything to do with a carbon monoxide problem. A number of teams, in trying to conserve weight on the new car, opted for a thinner metal piping for their exhaust systems. That led to failures. The problem is not expected to repeat this weekend at Martinsville.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. is undergoing culture shock. At least, that's how he sees the learning experience he and his Dale Earnhardt Inc. team are undergoing with NASCAR's new car of tomorrow. "It reminds me of my rookie year in 2000, when we came from the Busch Series and all of a sudden we had to learn how to make a much different car do the things we liked or were used to before," Earnhardt said.

For the second consecutive week, Mark Martin will not be in a race car on Sunday. He plans on going to Batesville, Ark., where he will have a big cookout during the race with some of his oldest friends. Regan Smith again will drive the No. 01 Chevrolet.

Like some other drivers in the first race of the car of tomorrow at Bristol Motor Speedway last weekend, Jamie McMurray had an issue with his brakes. Martinsville, site of Sunday's Goody's Cool Orange 500, is notoriously hard on brakes, so McMurray tested a new brake package at Caraway Speedway, earlier this week.

Former Georgetown player Brendan Gaughan's body will be at Martinsville Speedway this weekend for the Kroger 250 Craftsman Truck Series, but his mind will be 370 miles away in Atlanta, where the Hoyas will be playing Ohio State in the NCAA Final Four.
