Win or lose tonight, Florida basketball coach Billy Donovan likely will interview for the Kentucky job this week. Donovan hasn't confirmed or denied interest in the job, but UF president Bernie Machen has pledged that Florida will not let Donovan go without a fight. The pros are beginning to believe Texas' Kevin Durant may stay another year in college but not Ohio State's Greg Oden after his foul trouble in the NCAA tournament and horrible coaching. The consensus is few big men have been more poorly used than Oden in Ohio State's deliberate system, basically putting Oden in foul trouble and not allowing him to use his dominance to start the fast break by rebounding and dishing outlet passes. The trio of forward Joakim Noah, center Al Horford and forward Corey Brewer likely will leave Florida a year early to enter the NBA draft. The Jay Wright-to-Kentucky rumors officially can be put to bed. A source told the Daily News that the Villanova coach isn't headed to the Bluegrass State and that Wright already has made it clear he isn't interested in the job there. Nevada-Las Vegas men's basketball coach Lon Kruger said this afternoon that he has not been contacted by either Iowa or the search firm it has hired to assist in replacing Steve Alford. Creighton Coach Dana Altman still appeared to be a candidate Sunday for the University of Arkansas job. During the NCAA championship game between Ohio State and Florida on Monday night, Gators athletic director Jeremy Foley said that he would touch his good-luck charm frequently. It was given to him two years ago by a friend in Columbus, Ohio; it is a nut that fell from a Buckeye tree (aesculus glabra), the state tree of Ohio. If Ohio State coach Thad Matta were capable of shooting laser beams from his eyes, Ron Lewis might be wearing freshly installed keyholes in his skull. The OSU senior infused some life into Sunday's media proceedings. Having already labeled the defending champion Gators "a good team," Lewis was asked if his Buckeyes were a "great" team and not merely "good." Southern Illinois athletic director Mario Moccia vowed to do everything he could to keep Salukis coach Chris Lowery. Sunday Moccia backed up his pledge with a new contract. Lowery was mentioned for openings at Arkansas, Michigan and Iowa, among others. Look for new Minnesota basketball coach Tubby Smith to hire Ron Jirsa, who was fired as coach at Marshall, and son Saul, who was a point guard at Kentucky and an assistant at Tennessee Tech, as Gophers assistants. Redshirt freshman receiver Jamere Holland, perhaps the fastest player on USC's roster, finally got his football career out of the starting blocks Sunday. The former high school sprint champion caught three passes, scored a touchdown, carried the ball on a reverse and returned kicks. The Pitt football team has two recruits from the class of 2008 -- and both are from the Johnstown area. Mike Cruz, a junior tight end from Bishop McCort High School in Johnstown, made a verbal commitment to Pitt. In the fall, Johnstown running back Antwuan Reed committed to Pitt. Cruz chose Pitt over scholarship offers from West Virginia, Clemson, Virginia and Nebraska. | |||||||
