Arkansas announced Wednesday that it has hired Parker Executive Search, an Atlanta-based firm, to assist the school in its attempts to find Stan Heath's replacement. Winthrop's Gregg Marshall and former Stanford and Golden State coach Mike Montgomery could be among those considered for the Arkansas job. Rick Barnes of Texas is nearing a new contract with the Longhorns, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported. Barnes has been considered a possibility for Kentucky should [Billy] Donovan not move to Lexington. The Texas deal would increase Barnes' salary by $100,000 and include a pay raise for his assistants, the newspaper reported. A former Oklahoma walk-on football player accused of being paid for work he didn't perform at a Norman auto dealership regularly brought home dealership cars for his personal use, a former roommate said. Logan Brosky roomed with Jermaine Hardison, the walk-on, for about a year. Brosky said he knew several players who worked at Big Red Sports/Imports. Some of them would talk about how easy the job was. CBS college basketball analyst Billy Packer said he wasn't being insensitive or homophobic when he made a comment while being interviewed Friday from Atlanta on The Charlie Rose Show, which airs on PBS. Dictionary.com defines fag out as meaning "to tire or weary by labor; exhaust." Which is what Packer said he meant. The search for Harvard's new men's basketball coach could be finished by early next week. According to sources familiar with the process, the Crimson have been holding a series of on-campus interviews this week. Former Xavier coach Bob Stack interviewed Tuesday, former St. John's coach Mike Jarvis is scheduled for today, and former Michigan coach Tommy Amaker is expected to come in tomorrow. Former Laker Mychal Thompson wants anticipated Minnesota assistant Jimmy Williams to recruit one of his sons, 6-foot-6 junior guard Klay Thompson out of Santa Margarita High in California. Thompson has an older son who has committed to Pepperdine. Eden Prairie (Minn.) junior quarterback Ryan Grant, son of Eagles coach Mike Grant and grandson of former Vikings coach Bud Grant, on Wednesday committed to Minnesota. Senior quarterback Brady Leaf began Tuesday as Oregon's No. 2 quarterback behind senior Dennis Dixon, but coach Mike Bellotti was quick to point out that neither player has been declared the starter. In fact, before practice, Bellotti said nobody should feel safe. Eight days after Iona announced the buyout of former coach Jeff Ruland, the New Rochelle school has found his replacement. The Post has learned Louisville assistant Kevin Willard - son of Holy Cross head coach Ralph Willard - will take over a Gaels program that went 2-28 this season. According to reports, Penn State football players are being interviewed by the State College Police Department in connection with an assault, trespass and burglary that occurred over the weekend at an off-campus apartment. New UCLA offensive coordinator Jay Norvell spent the last three seasons at Nebraska teaching the West Coast passing game to those who once had a plow-horse mentality to offense. Norvell has made a lot of changes to the Bruins' system, coach Karl Dorrell said. Whether that means plays will be called differently or there will be a resumption of a cautious approach a frequent criticism last season is to be seen. Miami football coach Randy Shannon said on national signing day that the one position he regretted not filling was in the kicking game. He has a junior transfer punter/kicker from Florida State in Daren Daly and a redshirt freshman kicker/punter in Matt Bosher. Shannon was asked if he possibly could sign another kicker. ''We've got scholarships open,'' he said. ``If we can find a good kicker we will.'' Patrick Beverley is close to his Arkansas teammates, and at first discounted talk of drug use among the Razorbacks as a rumor. In addition, Arkansas Chancellor John White disclosed Wednesday that a third Razorback had been placed on academic suspension. New Arizona State coach Dennis Erickson has praised quarterback Rudy Carpenter's play this spring. He threw for three touchdowns in a scrimmage on Saturday including 50- and 70-yarders to Kyle Williams and also connected with Chris McGaha for 58 and 39 yards. Jermaine Robinson, a 6-foot-3, 173-pound safety, made a verbal commitment yesterday to West Virginia. A Hazelwood (Pa.) resident, Robinson also had an offer from Akron. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
