Terry Labonte won the Cup race in 1996, but he's no longer driving. What makes that even more remarkable is that 12 different drivers have won the 12 Cup races held at Texas, but neither Jimmie Johnson nor teammates Jeff Gordon, Kyle Busch and Casey Mears is in that group. The Chevrolet R07 engine development has progressed to the point where up to six teams are expected to run the engine at this weekend's race. Cars anticipated to debut the new Chevy engine are: Hendrick Motorsports teammates Casey Mears and Kyle Busch; Tony Stewart and his Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Denny Hamlin and J.J. Yeley as well as a fourth Richard Childress Racing entry, Scott Wimmer. Both the NASCAR Nextel Cup and Busch Series will run the same tire codes at Texas this weekend. This is the first time Goodyear has brought this specific combination of left- and right-side tires to the track, though each of these tire codes have been run in different combinations in the past. This left-side code (D-4078) is new to the Goodyear tire lineup for 2007 and was run by teams in both these series at California in February. This right-side code (D-4064) was run at both Chicagoland and Homestead during the second half of 2006. Key Motorsports officials have announced that defending Hooters Pro Cup champion Clay Rogers will drive two races for the Craftsman Truck Series team this year. Rogers, who last drove a truck in 2005, will be entered in Key's No. 40 Chevrolet at Kansas on April 28 and at Mansfield, Ohio, on May 26. Team owner Curtis Key said that Rogers could compete in other races for the team if he "shows us the ability to run consistently and can stay on top of the wheel." How long do you think it will be before some enterprising short-track promoter finds a way to get motorcycle racing superstars Ricky Carmichael and Jeremy McGrath hooked up in the same race? Carmichael is running a late model for Ginn Racing and now McGrath has signed on to do a similar program with JR Motorsports. In the motorcycle world, Carmichael and McGrath are among the all-time heavyweights. Craftsman Truck Series driver Mike Skinner will put his three-race win streak on the line this weekend ... in the streets of Long Beach, Calif. ... against movie director George Lucas, tennis star Martina Navratilova and actress Kathryn Morris, among others. Skinner is one of the pros who will compete in the Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race as part of the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach this weekend. Alba Colon, the Nextel Cup program manager for Chevrolet, is one of Hispanic Business magazine's of 20 Elite Women for 2007. One of the 20 will be named women of the year on April 26 in Las Vegas. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
