Some observers contend that pressure is building on Casey Mears to improve, now that he too is with Hendrick, and that he needs to reach Victory Lane soon to validate his abilities as a Cup driver. Mears disagrees. With a new team, car and crew chief, Mears' adjustment will take time, Hendrick officials said.

Michael Waltrip said he feels very fortunate he wasn't injured beyond cuts, scrapes and scratches, but it was what he did -- or didn't do -- afterward that has him in a jam. Saying he didn't know that even though his vehicle was the only one involved he was still required him to report the incident and remain at the scene until law enforcement arrived, Waltrip walked less than a mile to his home after climbing out of the wreckage. Waltrip insists that he did not go home to avoid being tested for intoxication.

Since entering Cup with partner Troy Aikman, Roger Staubach has adjusted his championship-caliber expectations to suit the harsh realities of being a single-car start-up team. Heading into Sunday's Samsung 500, the No. 96 Chevrolet is 26th in the standings, and Staubach is satisfied with its second-year progress. Staubach's wife, Marianne, noticed upon receiving an enthusiastic high-five from her husband after a 19th by Raines last month at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

With rain in the forecast for Friday at Texas Motor Speedway, eight teams are hoping the forecast is wrong and qualifying doesn't get washed out. Those drivers who would go home would be Ward Burton, David Reutimann, Scott Wimmer, Kevin Lepage, Jeremy Mayfield, John Andretti, Michael Waltrip and AJ Allmendinger.

Tony Stewart's No. 20 Chevrolet will take to the track this weekend with a slightly different look as The Home Depot shows its support for NASCAR Day 2007, now just a little more than a month away. In support of the initiative, the company will run a special NASCAR Day-themed paint scheme on the No. 20 Chevrolet driven by Stewart as he competes in the Samsung 500 at Texas Motor Speedway on Sunday.

Kevin Harvick and Mark Martin will race at Iowa Speedway this year. Harvick, driving for Richard Childress Racing, will race in the track's first NASCAR race, the NASCAR Grand National East-West Sunday, May 20. Martin, driving for Ginn Racing, will race Friday night, July 13, in the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series race.

Clint Bowyer will drive chassis No. 146, which was a new car in 2005. Dave Blaney raced this car twice at Pocono two years ago as well as at Chicagoland and California. Last year, Bowyer drove it at Texas in April, Chicagoland and Dover. Since then, the car has received all of the required 2007 updates in addition to a new body and rear clip.
