Kelley Earnhardt Elledge, sister, business manager and chief negotiator for Dale Earnhardt Jr., isn't yet convinced a contract extension with the company their father founded is on the horizon for NASCAR's biggest star. It's not that talks are going badly. But many variables exist -- and time is precious.

NASCAR fans often ask Richard Childress when he'll bring back the black No. 3 Chevrolet made famous by the late Dale Earnhardt. Fans who attended last Saturday's dirt-track races at 311 Speedway know the answer. The driver he chose to run No. 3 is young and talented, clean-cut and polite and thinks the world of Childress. He's Childress' oldest grandson, Austin Dillon.

The namesake for "Dale's Dip" was intrigued by efforts to fix the rough spot at Texas Motor Speedway. Dale Earnhardt Jr. complained about a slight depression between Turns 1 and 2 after the fall race, prompting a $50,000 repair job designed to "pump up" the surface of a 200-foot section of the track. "Sort of like, implants for a track," he mused. Track officials listened to their most successful driver, whose seven top-10 finishes in 12 Texas races lead all others.

Tony Raines, driver of the No. 96 DLP HDTV Chevy for Hall of Fame Racing, talked with Juan Pablo Montoya between practice sessions. Raines was looking at a possible top-10 finish at Martinsville until Montoya swerved inside of Raines and sent him into the wall on lap 377 of 500. "I thought we needed to talk about it and find out why it happened to put it behind us so it won't happen again," Raines said.

Mark Martin said he has no superstitions -- except for perhaps considering one type of good luck charm to be just the opposite. "Just please, no four-leaf clovers," Martin said. "I got one of those and taped it in my race car once at North Wilkesboro and I got crashed before the green flag came out."

Michael Waltrip isn't talking or racing this weekend. Waltrip will miss his sixth straight Nextel Cup race after qualifying at Texas was canceled Friday because of severe storms. Waltrip met Friday with NASCAR officials and also was examined by doctors at the track's infield car center. NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said Waltrip was seen and released, which would have cleared him to race this weekend.

The McGlynnRacing.com site is down while the DNS is being changed for the redesign. The No. 74 McGlynn Racing team is not shut down but recently merged with an entertainment company and are busy working through a myriad of things to get ready to race. Driver Derrike Cope and the No. 74 could be back on the track possibly as early as Talladega.
