Incoming freshman Eric Gordon was expected to give Indiana a boost next season. Playing alongside returning D.J. White only will make the Hoosiers stronger and deeper. Indiana fans had their biggest offseason wish granted when school officials announced Tuesday that White would return for his fourth season. -- Chicago Sun-Times

Illinois center Shaun Pruitt will declare for the NBA draft, according to sources close to Pruitt, but he won't retain an agent to protect his college eligibility. Pruitt will try to get an indication of where he might be picked in the draft and might be invited to take part in the pre-draft camp June 6-10 in Orlando, Fla. -- Chicago Sun-Times

Rodney Alexander, a 6-foot-7-inch small forward from Redlands Community College in Oklahoma, told the Tribune on Tuesday night he had sent a letter of intent to Illinois coach Bruce Weber. Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Indiana, Kentucky, Nebraska and Kansas State were among the other schools pursuing the former Benton Harbor (Mich.) high school player. -- Chicago Tribune

USC junior guard Gabe Pruitt said he might wait until the April 29 deadline to declare for the draft before making his decision, though he stressed that he would not hire an agent in the event he wanted to return for his senior season. Freshman forward Taj Gibson said he thought about declaring "a lot" but has opted to return next year. -- Los Angeles Times

South Carolina quarterback Stephen Garcia, arrested twice this year, returned to the team earlier than expected when coach Steve Spurrier lifted his suspension at the end of spring practice, the school confirmed Tuesday. -- Charlotte Observer

The Miami baseball team will take additional security for its weekend series at Virginia Tech. coach Jim Morris said UM would bring probably one or two more officers in addition to the usual state trooper who travels with the team. ''It's just to make our players feel comfortable and more at ease,'' Morris said. ``It'll be probably be the safest place in America.'' -- Miami Herald

The Big Ten basketball schedule is about to get a little tougher for everyone. Conference officials have approved an 18-game schedule starting next season, although details of how it will be implemented have not been released. -- Chicago Sun-Times

An attorney for former LSU women's basketball coach Pokey Chatman claimed Tuesday that the school pressured Chatman into resigning because of allegations of inappropriate conduct with former players. Chatman's attorney said LSU Systems General Counsel Ray Lamonica used a "material misrepresentation" to help induce Chatman to resign at a meeting. Her attorney also said the school relied on hearsay evidence from assistant coach Carla Berry. -- New Orleans Times-Picayune

LSU point guard Ben Voogd said Tuesday he plans to transfer to another school. Washington State, which recruited Voogd, is one possible destination, as is Wyoming. Voogd appeared to be the odd man out when the Tigers signed two guards during the past week -- junior college transfer Marcus Thornton and point guard Bo Spencer. -- New Orleans Times-Picayune

Rutgers football coach Greg Schiano took another step toward making his next recruiting class the best one yet when Eric LeGrand, one of the state's top linebackers, gave a verbal commitment to play for the Knights starting in the fall of 2008. LeGrand was being recruited by Virginia, Florida, Maryland, Michigan, Notre Dame and Ohio State . -- Newark Star-Ledger

After an off-year, Bobby Bowden and Florida State are off to a strong start, already landing commitments from three of Scout's top 100 juniors: linebacker Nigel Bradham (No. 16, Crawfordville, Fla.); linebacker Nigel Carr (No. 71, Jacksonville); and safety C.J. Robert Morris athletic director Craig Coleman will begin face-to-face interviews within the next two days with candidates to succeed basketball coach Mark Schmidt. Penn State running back Austin Scott said it was his decision to redshirt last season in hopes of making a national championship run this fall. Scott spent the 8-4 season on the scout team and will have gone without playing in a game for 20 months when the Nittany Lions open their season. While some players would look at that as a waste of time, Scott said he embraced being one of the unsung players. -- Philadelphia Inquirer

New Minnesota football coach Tim Brewster, intent on keeping in-state high school football players in Minnesota, was in the northern part of the state Tuesday visiting Bemidji, East Grand Forks and Detroit Lakes, among others.
