Don't be surprised if they make a move for a left-handed reliever. The Cubs' Will Ohman is among those they are studying. -- Chicago Tribune Ryan Howard walked with less of a limp yesterday at Great American Ball Park. Consider that progress. There is a chance Howard could return to the starting lineup Saturday. -- Philadelphia Inquirer Joe Torre said it more than once in spring training. He wasn't going to use Mariano Rivera in the eighth inning this season. Period. Maybe he should have stuck to that vow a little longer. -- New York Daily News Red Sox manager Terry Francona had no interest in tipping his hand to Yankees counterpart Joe Torre last night about whether Jonathan Papelbon would be available to close after back-to-back appearances in Toronto. Papelbon runs through a daily regimen of strength exercises to test his rotator cuff and pitching elbow, among other things. -- Boston Globe Kyle Snyder admitted he thinks about what decision the Red Sox will make regarding lefthander Jon Lester, and how it will impact Snyder's status. The guess is the Sox will option Lester to Pawtucket for an indefinite period before promoting him to the big leagues. -- Boston Globe Miguel Cabrera said his oblique injury is ''nothing serious,'' and Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez said Cabrera could be back as early as Saturday. -- Miami Herald Bartolo Colon, sidelined for nearly eight months with a torn rotator cuff, will start Saturday night against the Mariners, Colon's first start since last July 26. Colon will not be on a strict pitch count, Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. -- Los Angeles Times The Devil Rays' 16th game of the season brought DH Jonny Gomes' third start, but manager Joe Maddon promised to be "creative" in finding more playing time for the slugger. Maddon mentioned a possible platoon for Gomes, though the others who have had the most time at DH, Rocco Baldelli and Elijah Dukes, also hit right-handed. -- Tampa Tribune Dodgers right fielder Matt Kemp suffered a setback when he experienced soreness in his separated shoulder after making a throw from the outfield while playing for triple-A Las Vegas. Kemp remained in the game but began feeling stiffness the next day, Dodgers Manager Grady Little said. -- Los Angeles Times Sharp-eyed fans might have noticed during the Orioles' opening homestand that the outfield wall at Camden Yards was a lighter "kelly" green instead of the traditional "Camden" green. It wasn't supposed to be. Maryland Stadium Authority ordered new padding for the wall based on a fabric swatch that appeared to be the same color as always. But the product proved to be a lighter green. -- Baltimore Sun | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
