Best Place to catch a concert: Georgia Theater was the home of REM and the B-52's, who played there before they became famous. Not only can you catch a great show, it's also a great place to watch a UGA game, or a movie. Best place to procrastinate: With four floors of space complete with computers and classrooms, a Jittery Joes on the second floor, and a Chick-Fil-A in the Tate Student Center nearby, just try to study at the Student Learning Center during finals. If you don't fall asleep in the overstuffed chairs, you'll spend more time looking at the people who wander the floors looking for a place to study -- just in case you might know them and want someone to hang with. Best way to avoid a night in jail: Carry a matchbook from Aaron Bonding Company, or wear one of their t-shirts. Any student who shows the matchbook or wears the shirt receives a 10 percent discount on getting sprung from the big house. Best place to watch a lunatic: Pick any freshman bar around 2 or 3 a.m. Another great place is at the men's or women's basketball games or the gymnastics meets. Fans dress in their game-day craziest. Free pizzas from Papa John's or an up-close seat on the gymnastics meet floor often go to the craziest-acting or most oddly-dressed fan. Best way to burn calories: Hit up one of Athens' many gyms, including the Ramsey Student Center on East Campus. This three-story gym includes exercise and dance classes taught by fellow students, a lap pool, dive pool, basketball courts and free weights. This easy alternative to paying for a gym is a popular choice for students seeking to shed the newly (or not so newly) acquired Freshman 15. Best class(es): FDST 2020 - Beer History, Folklore, and Science explores the history and chemistry of brewing and tasting from the dawn of mankind to modern America. Professors created this class to entice students into the Food Science department. And, of course, it worked. In four years of trying to take this class, I was never able to get in before it filled up. The other class to take is PSYC 3260: Human Sexuality, taught by Dr. Pollack. With textbooks such as Guide to Getting It On and study aids such as 1970's porno movies, this class definitely peaks the interest, among other things, of most students. I have never taken this class, but my roommate did. Each night after class, she would read her notes to us, and they sounded like a guide from Sex and the City. Best date place: Located on North campus, the Founder's Garden is complete with a fountain, benches, several types of plants and flowers, and soft lighting at night to help set the mood. Secluded by trees, and far enough away from the noise of downtown, this is the busiest place for couples seeking a romantic evening on Valentine's Day.
Best place to pose with a bulldog: Throughout Athens, you'll find statues of bulldogs dressed to match the surrounding areas. For example, the bulldog in front of a doctor's office is dressed like, surprise, a doctor. The dowtown dog is the most famous for bar-goers and visitors, who are often found sitting on top of it and posing. Best Frat Party: Shipwreck, thrown by Tau Epsilon Phi, turns the entire fraternity house on the bustling corner of Baxter and Lumpkin Streets into a beach theme complete with volleyball pit, boats parked in the front yard, and other such decorations. It's very hard to go to class when you pass Shipwreck, because the frat guys are outside playing volleyball in the sand pit or sitting on the porch drinking. The frat also decorates the house to look exactly like an island. On the other hand, Delta Tau Delta's annual "Delt Deserted Island" is also not to be missed, mainly because it lasts all weekend. These guys go all out with bamboo -- inside and outside --, palm trees, sand pits, and pools. At both parties, the drinks flow freely, the guys are more than hospitable, and everyone has an amazing time. The first time my friends and I visited, these parties became a permanent mark on our calendars each year. Best time to celebrate the (almost) end of the semester: Between the last day of classes and the first day of the study period before exams commence, students flock to the downtown scene to blow off academic steam on Reading Day Eve. 2 of 2 | |||||||||
