Word in national coaching circles is that TCU's Gary Patterson has withdrawn from consideration for the Minnesota's head football coaching job. Don't be too surprised to see three Stoops brothers as college head coaches pretty soon. Arizona defensive coordinator Mark Stoops is a serious candidate for the football head coaching opening at Rice, according to the Houston Chronicle. Gary Crowton, the former head coach at Brigham Young and Louisiana Tech, has agreed to leave his offensive coordinator position at Oregon to become LSU's offensive coordinator, an LSU athletic department official confirmed on Monday night. The University of Minnesota's football coaching search appears to be heating up. One report said the school has hired Denver Broncos tight ends coach Tim Brewster. Another said Florida assistant coach/defensive coordinator Charlie Strong was on the Minnesota campus for an interview Monday. For the second time in a little more than a month, a Rutgers football coach has said thanks but no thanks to an offer from Miami. John McNulty, the Scarlet Knights' assistant offensive coordinator, said yesterday that he has decided to remain in Piscataway rather than become the Hurricanes' new offensive coordinator. Oregon State athletic director Bob De Carolis says coach Mike Riley's contract extension heads offseason chores. Riley is thought to be asking for at least three more years, a raise in salary and added concessions for his staff. Having gone from a contender for the starting point guard spot to one of the last players off the bench, USC freshman Kevin Galloway has decided to transfer, Coach Tim Floyd said Monday. Floyd didn't know where Galloway intended to enroll, though the coach said a junior college was a possibility. Two-sport athlete Martellus Bennett said that Texas A&M basketball coach Billy Gillispie called him last week and the two had a long talk, which resulted in Bennett changing his mind and deciding to join the basketball team for a second season. Georgia junior linebacker Brandon Miller, who could also be employed as a defensive end in 2007, has decided not to enter the NFL Draft. Miller had filed papers but more for exploratory purposes. Miller's size (6-4, 250) and quickness will make him a candidate to move to the end position. Packers running backs coach Edgar Bennett was mentioned in a Florida newspaper as being a candidate for a similar job at his alma mater, Florida State. | |||||||
