Rumors have persisted for months that Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones might consider hiring Houston Nutt in some capacity, either as a coach or front office executive. Arkansas quarterback Mitch Mustain visited Tulsa on Thursday, said his mother, Beck Campbell. Mustain has also been linked to Oklahoma, Texas-El Paso and Texas Tech. Campbell said Thursday night that she wanted him to be enrolled at a university by Monday. Former LSU football coach Nick Saban keeps recruiting Louisiana football players -- even ones who have announced they plan to play football for the Tigers. Saban, the new Alabama coach, made visits in the last week to two players who have made oral commitments to attend LSU. Family members of both players said Saban took credit for LSU's 22-4 record since he left, saying it was done with players he brought to Baton Rouge. LSU coach Les Miles dispatched assistant coaches Bo Pelini, Doug Mallory and Josh Henson to follow up both of Saban's visits. Robert Marve, Florida's high school record-holding quarterback, is thinking of switching his commitment from Alabama to Miami. Mavre said he will rely heavily on his parents to help make his decision. He had orally committed to Alabama before coach Mike Shula was fired, and before Sunday called Alabama a soft commitment. Some of Rutgers University's assistant football coaches are receiving hefty raises this year, even as the rest of the university is laying off workers and cutting programs amid an $80 million funding shortfall in New Jersey. Has former Seton Hall coach Tommy Amaker saved his job at Michigan yet? Not quite, even though the Wolverines are 16-4. It's a suspicious 16-4, because Michigan really hasn't beaten any team of consequence yet. Peachtree Ridge defensive lineman Cameron Heyward remains undecided after returning to Atlanta late Sunday from his official visit with national champion Florida. Heyward, who has narrowed his college choices to Florida, Georgia, LSU and Ohio State, will be courted by the Bulldogs when he heads to Athens this weekend. After Georgia offensive line coach Neil Callaway's recent departure to become head coach at UAB, there had been whispers that Columbus Hardaway star Antwane Greenlee might be second-guessing his commitment to the Bulldogs. Greenlee said he is finished with his official on-campus visits, but that apparently won't stop Florida State coach Bobby Bowden from making one last pitch. The Minnesota Gophers are trying, but Cretin-Derham Hall linebacker Broderick Binns' oral commitment to Iowa couldn't be stronger, and he's clearly headed to the Hawkeyes. Missouri coaches and players acknowledge their first 0-4 conference start since 1985 is partly the result of a soft nonconference schedule that did little to prepare them for Big 12 play. Because of that, next year's schedule, which is not yet completed, will be much more difficult. | |||||||
